served from nitrogen tap into large pint glass at Mellow Mushroom, southeast Huntsville

A: nice color, large 3 finger head that took a long time to settle down. Lots of persistent lacing

S: sweet but not overly so, whiff of banana is clear

T: Nice but not overwhelming banana taste. Neither hops nor malt really come through.

M: Medium body, very smooth due to the nitrogen

O: very interesting and enjoyable beer, quite easy to put a few away on a summer night

A: Dark gold in color with a small white head.

S: Pretty much Banana bread and beer. But the beer is pretty bready. Very mellow smell. Not too strong.

T: Tastes exactly like banana bread. Almost no hop spice, but a decent amount of malts. Not too bad. The problem here is I just don't want banana in my beer. Not the beers fault at all. (Girlfriend bought it)

M: Light to medium body with low carbonation. Nice crisp finish.

O: Its is a good beer, but not for me. If you like banana bread however, you should love it.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before March 1 2013. I've been aware of this beer for a while now and have always wanted to try it, but never seemed to be able to find it anywhere. Luckily, I noticed this bottle on the shelves while shopping in London.

Pours an attractive, clear amber-orange colour. Generates a little more than a finger's worth of dense, creamy white head that hangs around for a few minutes before dissipating into a thin, soapy cap. Mild aroma with bready malts, caramel, some light nuttiness, with lots of ripe banana to round it out. Also has some of that light skunkiness I usually find in clear-bottled EPAs (e.g. Spitfire).

One thing's for sure - this stuff comes as advertised, because I definitely get a banana bread vibe from the combination of flavours. The bready wheat malt and toffee backbone works nicely with the overripe banana flavour, and is accompanied by hints of vanilla and cinnamon. Slight dryness in the finish, with some lingering banana. Good flavour, but the body is a bit lacking - it starts off creamy, but once the head is gone it just comes across as watery and over-carbonated. Pretty light-bodied, and as easy to throw back quickly as most English-style session ales.

Pretty one-dimensional flavour, but it fits together nicely and I can't fairly say that it's anything less than enjoyable. I would prefer more body, but this is still a refreshing, highly drinkable, and somewhat interesting brew. Still, despite my mildly positive impressions, I also have a lingering negative one in the back of my mind - that this might just be a mediocre-to-serviceable EPA with some deftly-integrated banana flavour.

Final Grade: 3.4, an acceptable B-minus grade in academic terms. Fruit beers have never really been my thing, but Wells Banana Bread Beer is an enjoyable example that I might just pick up again some time. Fans of banana bread are unlikely to be disappointed, because this beer really does emulate its flavour surprisingly well. Not my favourite Wells & Young offering by a longshot, but still a respectable brew that is worth at least one try.

A 500ml clear glass bottle with a BB of Oct 2012. The neck label states that fairtrade bananas are added during the brewing process.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A clear orange-amber colour with medium carbonation. Forms a smallish head of frothy off-white foam that dissipates swiftly. Aroma of cloyingly sweet ripe bananas, along with bready notes, a hint of caramel and faint ale yeast.

Tastes of sweet bananas with a caramel malt character and a dry finish. Pretty sugary and somewhat bready. Notes of bananas, subtle caramel, ale yeast and mild stewed hops. Slightly dry upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and prickly, but rather thin and insubstantial. Lightly astringent. Aftertaste of sweet bananas.

An interesting effort - the description of liquid banana bread is entirely justified. Plenty of banana on display and very sweet. The banana is very intense in the aroma, but balanced by a more obvious malt character in the flavour. The mouthfeel is too watery and doesn't stand up to the relatively strong taste. Overall it goes down better than expected, though I probably won't seek it out again. Worth trying.
