Regularly sampled at both my local Irish and English styled pubs, this review is based on a traditional 330ml bottle. This one is as authentic as the name itself -- dubbed the Authentic Irish Ale here in Canada, this one lives up to the billing.
Brewed and bottled by Smithwick's in Killkenny, Ireland, the version sold here in Canada is of the 5%abv variety. My understanding is that the version sold in the US is slightly different and does carry different packaging (black is the prominent color), but in Canada, we get the 3 lable, green foil label with strong accents in gold, white and red. Quite a nice, almost trendy (neveau) style package.
As for the important stuff -- the ale itself -- this one pours very well presenting a very large white foamy head which *slowly* disipates to a thin, but solid surface cover. Lacing is extensive (both from bottle and tap poured drinks).
The brew has a striking aroma blending hints of caramel and filbert (nuts) but with a very clean mix of malt and hops without going overboard in the hop department ... something too many ales fail to handle successfully.
Palette wise, the bottle version seems to have an extra carbination punch that the draught version doesn't have, but that carbination hit turns what is very smooth from the tap to something a little more harsh. Not necessarily a bad thing, but just different and worth noting.
Out of the 2 traditional Irish ales I drink regularly -- Smithwicks and Killkenny -- the Smithwicks is one that can be had in larger quantities, but the creamy smoothness of Killkenny still calls my name more frequently than here. Having said that, don't shy away from Smithwicks as it too is a very good ale. Make that great ale!!
