Best before Jan 1, 2009

A - very dark reddy/brown, clear (except for the sediment that accidentally ended up in my glass), lots of carbonation, dense and creamy light tan head, excellent retention, some lacing

S - lots of spices, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, dark fruit, pretty complex, but not overly strong

T - a big ol' blast of dark fruit, raisins, dates, even a bit of currant, hint of licorice, alcohol adds depth and complexity to flavours, spice is more reserved in the flavour, it lingers moreseo in the long aftertaste

M - high carbonation is surprisingly smooth, light body, alcohol warmth not overly noticable despite the obvious booziness throughout,

D - well integrated flavours, exceptionally smooth despite the big alcohol, dry finish, light body and high carbonation

A pretty nice dark strong, smooth as a baby's bottom. Excellent in fact, but comes up short of my 3 favourites (Rochefort 10, St Bernardus Abt 12, and Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van de Kaiser). The flavours and aromas are great, but could be a little stronger.

I was picking up something different in the flavour that I couldn't quite place, but I went to their website and I see this beer is oak aged. This makes a lot of sense, as I now remember this same character in the De Struise Pannepot.

The one thing that really threw me for a loop was the ton of sediment at the bottom. I thought this was a champagne beer?

Drank from my St Bernardus Chalice

A - Pours a deep Mahogany colour with a two fingered off white head that reatins well and laces the glass.

S - Plenty of fig, burnt sugar, dark fruit malts. Big aromas

T - Up front some nice chocolatey malts, unlike the aroma. Bits of aniseed, caramel and stewed cherries complement the exquisite flavour. The finish is long and a tiny bit warming.

M - Medium to full body with full carbonation.

O - This beer is exquisite full stop, and is the only dark version of this style that I know of. The benchmark it sets and difficult to beat.

A

750ml rested a year into a tulip. Pours a deep walnut cola, dark garnet when back lit, dense tan head, nice lacing.

The aroma is delicious. Heavy with dark fruits that have softened, a crate would have an ooze escaping the bottom. Significant grape bubblegum, chocolate and vanilla. A classic dense heavy bsda. wonderful

Flavor is strong, intense, exactly what the nose promised. Dark fruits now with a bitter sweet. Long lasting dark chocolate minor bitter aftertaste, lingers leisurely. A phenolic overtone stays in the background. Vanilla dark cherries. The alcohol, while obvious, compliments as a flavor ingredient. While the mouthfeel is lively it doesn't seem to be atypically carbonated.

Bottle shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike!

Served side by side with Malheur Bière Brut (Brut Reserve).

The beer is chestnut brown colored with a fizzy, beige head that leaves sparse lacing on the glass. The aroma is sweet, yeasty, fruity. The flavor is pretty tasty, with prominent yeast and spice notes. Earthy with some alcoholic warmth in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, I enjoyed this. Good for splitting several ways at a tasting.

Basically a side by side with the other one, thanks Mike. Beer is black with a tan off white head of small bublbes, lower retention, aggressive carbonation, some lacing, looks fine.

Aroma is sweet, estery, very yeasty, a little more spicy than the blonde version.

Beer is light in body and a little earthy / spicy on the palate, the yeast comes through nicely as well. Ultimately I didn't like this one as much as the blonde, if I were to have one again it would be the other Bière de Champagne / Bière Brut, a nice tasting though.
