We pull the foil, cage, and cork off a 750mL bottle, pouring into flutes. The pour is deafeningly audible, layering down a brew of cloudy golden straw and a two finger head of fizzy, chunky white foam that continues the symphony. This retains well, leaving thick ridges of lacing all around our glasses. Aside from that haze no sediment is found, and carbonation is intensely active, as expected. The aroma gives intense cloying sweetness of red apples, pear, and figgy syrups, Belgian pale and chalked wheaty maltiness, steely metallics, pencil graphite, sweet cotton candy sugars, tart champagne yeastiness, white wine grape sours, warmed salt water taffy, white vinegar, rosey florals, dried brown grassiness, wool, and light buttery diacetyls. The flavoring blends together cloying white sugar sweetness, singed caramel and pale maltiness, dusty tweed blazers, big white wine and champagne grapey sweetness, harsh vodka and brandy booziness, nail polish remover chemical bite, drying walnut skins, paper towels, envelope adhesives, foamy plastics, sea salty fishiness, fig and plum jam, flambéed apples, allspice, and medicinal phenols. The body is rather full, and carbonation is active. The beer is surprisingly thick and syrupy, giving nice and hearty slurp and smack, with slightly slower and subdued cream and froth. Finishing pop is supreme. The mouth is coated in its entirety, but this disappears quickly with a minty ethanolic burn that both dries and cleanses the palate. The abv is appropriate for the style, but the nature of this beast makes you want to take your time with her.

Overall, this was a beer saved for and enjoyed for a celebration!! In brief, today we both received our first residency interview invitations at the same place, thus allowing us to stay together throughout the remainder of our training. Highly exciting stuff. The most surprising thing about this beer was its feel. It is shockingly heavy on the feel, but gives you a wonderful drying cleanliness before each sip is gone. As far as the taste goes, for something labeled “Brut”, the driest possible form of champagne, this is a brightly and cloyingly sweet drink. The residual sugars are high, along with that big booziness, suggesting a big, big grain bill during the brewing process. For this first foray into the style we are pleased, but not wooed. This was a nice introduction, but I believe we would prefer something a bit tamer, dryer, and more refined stylistically. (2,493 characters)

Notes from the 2002 Kerstbierfestival, Essen, Belgium.

This beer has been subject to a similar process to Champagne production. The yeast sediment settles in the neck of the bottle while in the cellars ... there it is frozen and removed by a technique known as "degorgement." It's then bottled traditionally, "bouteille Champenoise."

Dark, honey blond color with thin wisp lace. A bit cloudy, where I expected a lot of clarity. Funky, musty, cheesy hop character with a dose of raw herbal in your face. Prickly carbonation. Huge sweetness. Notes of honey, candy, caramel, pear, apple and a distinct and very notable vanilla bean flavor. Some sharp lemon mingles with the carbonation. Confectionery sweetness comes to mind. Dirty yeast underneath with some herbal phenols on the top of the mouth.

What a wonderfully different approach to beer! I'm sure this will be recognized as a new style someday.

Appearance: The head was not much to talk about but was present, a bit on the hazy side donning a yellowish beige hue.

Smell: Musty cheese hop aroma with a nutty earthy yeast and vague fruitiness in the back.

Taste: Fruity palate of apple skin, pears and lemon zest. Powdery yeast and a dry malt character form from middle to end with a warming alcohol.

Mouthfeel: More smoothness that actual sting crispness, again smooth with an unwavering light body.

Drinkability & Notes: A bit champagne like but with the beer qualities there is no confusion. This is beyond Duvel and the like, not better just more complex. (624 characters)

Large bottle, caged and corked, pours medium apricot, quite cloudy, under a nice looking off white head. Retention looks decent and the fades to a tiny bubble nice looking film and also plenty of intricate and sticky lace. Floral and fruity nose, with traces of yeast and lemony spice. Full flavor Belgian, the expected coriander, citrus, pepper, gin, and yeast show up in all their glory. Pleasingly dry, with tart and crisp hopping. Loads of lime, tonic, gin, pepper all follow through the center and towards the finish. Large and bold, go get some of this classy, and thoroughly enjoyable rejoice offering, Belgian lovers rejoice. (633 characters)

L: Pours brilliant straw gold under a 3” foam cap that pershes ½” up over the rim of the glass.
S: Big fruit and floral aromas.
T: A very dry palate with a variety of fruit and citrus flavors, faint vanilla and a hint of grain.
F: Smooth and medium light body with champagne like carbonation.
O: A truly incredible beer with faint grain qualities reminding you that this is not a champagne. (399 characters)

Picked this up at Green's on Ponce in Atlanta for only $9.99, and had on New Year's Eve.

Pours a hazy lemon-yellow color with a huge and frothy white head that I have to let settle in two glasses before I can empty the bottle. The head sticks around for the life of the beer and lacing is solid.

Smells like a fruity saison more than anything - although it's not quite as spicy as most saisons. Fruits are sour apple with citrus aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sour apple and sharp citrus flavors are backed up by sweet malts. There's a surprisingly bitter ending. Alcohol is there, but mainly as a warming sensation.

Mouthfeel is good. It's lighter than I'd anticipated for the high ABV with active carbonation. Very refreshing.

Drinkability is very good. The high ABV is noticeable, but it's certainly not as intense as it could be for such a light-bodied beer.

Overall I was impressed and will hopefully try a few more of this style. I'm happy with paying 10 dollars for this, but the ~$25 price tag I've heard others speak of seems a bit steep. (1,063 characters)

Nothing really champagne like at all as others suggest. Still very big and powerful. Heavy mouthfeel, with some detergent flavour with some peppery alcohol, like many tripels. In fact this reminded me of a blend between Westmalle Tripel, Chimay White and Orval. Complex and rich, yet i don't really think they pulled this one off as well as they could have, still a nice one though. (382 characters)

My girlfriend's birthday, and she likes Belgian ales and the bubbly. Seems like a no-brainer to pop the cork on this beer-world Champagne analogue.

This beer pours a very hazy light straw colour, with a copious amount of thin foamy white head, which leaves sparse lace around the glass. It smells of candy sugar, light white grain, faint yeast, and alcohol. The taste is boozy white cracker grain, sweet musty citrus fruit, and an herbal tinge - the resemblance to a Belgian strong pale ale is fairly strong. The carbonation is quite heavy at first, but mellows quickly. The body is on the light side, with some mild buttery creaminess, and the alcohol creates a palate-lifting airiness. It finishes dry, some warm fruitiness closing things out.

A very tasty, solid, and warmly effervescent quaff, highly suitable for all your celebratory needs. (847 characters)

Brought a bottle back from Belgium where it wasn't crazy expensive. In a nutshell, this beer was like a Belgian sugar cookie in a glass. There's a strong, but not too rich bready sweet cookie flavor with hints of cinnamon, sugar candy, and a hint of lime. This is very, very drinkable while being pleasantly complex. If this beer weren't $25+ I'd definitely drink more. (369 characters)

Cloudy pale golden with extreme mousse-like head and streaming bubbles.

Smells of sweet spicy grain, like a mild Saison or spicy Pils.

Sweet heavy pilsner-like malt flavor with some candy sugar and spicy herbal hops that don't quite beat the lingering sweetness.

Awesome champagne-like mouthfeel with sweet and slightly bitter finish. This is good stuff, great aroma, but definately a special occasion bottle- mostly due to the extreme price. (451 characters)

Originally reviewed March 31, 2007. Pizza Port Belgian Beer Fest. Pour from a 750mL.Aroma finds itself as touching in slightly sickly malt and coarse cigarette ash. Cloudy deep yellow pour, with white rim. Flavor a rich, tawny creamed malt carrying the nicely belgian yeast notes, with high rich phenols but none of the harshness of chemical notes. Gently percolating in attenuated beauty. Aroma suffers but flavor and body are crisply done. (441 characters)

A: Pours a light clear lemon color with a big white fluffy head.

S: Nice lemon bread aroma and spiciness with some coriander to start.

T: For flavor some light lemonbread, fresh fruit (pears, apples), and a nice light fading lemon finish. Very crisp finish with sour lemons.

M: Champagne like carbonation provides a light mouthful with some fizziness and a slight alcohol detection.

D: very drinkable, smooth, and pleasant on the tongue. Alcohol is pretty well hidden for 11%. Overall a very refined Belgian that drinks like a champagne. (544 characters)

Bottle: Poured a hazy deep golden ale with a small bubbly head with average retention and no lacing. Aroma of light sweet malt notes with some weird ester or maybe it's the yeast but something is surely different. Taste is sweeter and lighter then expected with some sweet malt and light yeasty bready finish. Body was full with some low filtration and some great carbonation. Alcohol is not apparent which is quite surprising considering the 11% contained in this beer. I am glad I tried this but considering the price tag it is unlikely I will try this again. (561 characters)

750ml bottle into 25oz wine glass. First review of the style. Best before date of June 30th, '08.

Cloudy goldenrod hue with a thick three finger while head that slowly settles to a thin cap. Rings of foamy lacing. Each new pour creates a tall fluffy head that seems to last forever.

Orange peel along with a light slightly sour citrus aroma. Light spiciness. A good bit of buttery diacetyl is in the foreground.

An interesting toasty flavor which almost imparts a bit of smokiness. More light fruit - orange, peach, apple (a fizzy fruit cocktail). A bit of sharp herb is in there as well. Full bodied with high carbonation.

Not a bad introduction to the style. If this is past the "best by" date, then I wonder what it's like before it. I'd like to try the dark version of this one w/ chocolate. Recommended. (815 characters)
