A very good quad that borders on greatness. This beer is not quite up to the heights of the style, but that's a very weak criticism. (I'm pretty sure that I've written almost those exact same words about another beer, so I apologize for my lack of imagination) This beer pours a rich dark brown with a bit frothy head and good lacing. It has a lot of malt flavor, plenty of spice and interesting Belgian fruit esters. There are sweetly brandied plums, well-toasted malt and good earthiness. Without grading down for the style, this beer would receive an extra half point in most categories. The feel is rich and luxurious. The finish is a bit dry but still leaves some great lingering flavors on the palette.

This beer was paired with a pork tenderloined brined with the beer, cheddar scallion potato cake and a parsnip, mushroom, bacon mix (that part didn't quite fit the menu's description so I won't give the fancy menu wording) at The Monk's Kettle New Year's Eve Malheur Beer Dinner. It went well with the pork and potato, but not so well with the semi-bitter parsnip sautee.

Pours a very dark reddish brown color body. Small off-white head head, quickly diminishing. Funky smell, sour. Dark fruits.. Creamy mouthfeel, some fizziness. Dark fruit taste Some dark chocolate/coffee taste. Some alcohol warmness.

750 ml cage-corked bottle, best before end of 15.04.11, poured into tulip glass:

Pours dark brown with a thin creamy tan head. Rings of lacing stick.

The smell is of caramel/toffee with anise. Earthy and rooty notes.

The taste is of toffee, anise, earthy very complex and rounded together. Some vinuous notes come through as it progresses. A floral touch comes through at the finish.

The feel is rich and creamy.

It is very well-balanced. Creamy and complex. Alcohol shows only slightly, making it very approachable for abv. Very drinkable for a "big" beer. Very enjoyable!

Pours a hazy copper with a frothy off-white head. Spice, bubble gum, caramel, plums, figs, and yeast in the nose. Rich, velvety mouthfeel. Vinuous taste along with molasses and the darker fruits. Heavy malt, but more like a sweeter cognac than caramel. Warm alcohol finish. A very nice beer.

The Malheur 12 was really quite an odd beer, with a beautiful dark amber color and a light head. It was a great consistency and a bit heady, but thats common for big bottle belgians. Roomate picked it up at the local beer store (Rodmans in DC) and poured in a tall glass. The smell was very fruity, though the presence of the alcohol (12% ABV) was certainly a turn-on.

The taste was incredibly soft and the fruitiness and maltiness hit the palate together almost immediately. Its a combination a lot of beers try for (the Delerium Nocturnum, to name one), but can never quite balance out the way this beer does.

The dark fruit, caramel maltiness, and subtleties in lacing make the Malheur 12 exceptionally soft in the mouth, but the beer does not round out enough in the end to make it really drinkable in the long run. Fantastic beer for a glass, but reluctant to drink continuously.

Had this at The Metropolitan in Baltimore. The appearance is typical quad; chocolate brown with an airy off white head. The smell is of chocolate and alcohol, and some rich roasted malt. The flavor I find to be similar if not better than st. bernadus abt12. I think Malheur 12 has a richer chocolate flavor to blend with the alcohol where the sbt12 lets the alcohol to do more of the talking. The rich chocolate also helps the balance because less sharp astringent alcohol you test the easier it is to balance with a little hops. Mouth feel is bubbly and quick to evaporate. drinkability is good for a quad do to it's balance which is do to it's rich chocolate malt flavors.

From notes 10-2-08

Eye: Very dark brown in color, can't see any highlights in this beer, no light seems able to pass through it. Head is tan in color, creamy in texture and has great retention and formation qualities. An oddity that I can see is that some yeast from the bottom of the bottle is suspended in the middle of the glass. I'm not talking about small particles, that seems quite normal to me. These are a few larger chunks that have yet to settle. In my previous expereince all others where yeast has made it in has sunk within the time that it has taken me to dictate aroma and eye, this one however seems to be content just lingering in purgatory...right in the middle of my glass. I find it odd that the yeast didn't break up when poured, no haze, just a few large chunks, not a flaw but quite interesting as this is the first time I've ever seen this. Lacing is quite nice, leaving sheets and rings.

Nose: Very potent aroma, before the glass is even close to my nose I can smell, tons of dark malt-chocolaty mainly and some roasted grain. Alcohol jumps out too. On closer inspection, with my nose in the glass: Oak, vanilla, bourbon. The first three words that came to mind. The aroma really reminds me quite a bit like the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout- in the aspect of the dark malts. Hints of coconut. At first what was so potent is now weaker, harder to detect.

Tongue: Odd flavor here, my first thoughts are medicinal and grape. Kinda reminds me of grape cough syrup. I don't know why, maybe its just the odd concoction of flavor and alcohol that does it but I'm not going to be able to get past that now. Its especially noticable in the aftertaste-whilst being swallowed and after. It isn't bad, but if you ask me the taste is much too thin, not much substance to it. Some chocolate in there, but really the flavor of this beer, the taste seems much too watery. After drinking the 10 I was hoping for much of the same intracacy and complexity, but alas not here. Disappointing. I'm not really looking forward to finishing this one... but I will.

Mouthfeel and Drinkability: Overall thin and watery if you ask me. Anything coming from Belgium should be much heartier. This is one that I'll not ever buy again, I'm glad I didn't waste money on a four-pack of this, I'm glad that I received this as a free sample. Just not anywhere near to par in my book. It just doesn't cut it as any type of beer, too much cough syrup going on in here.

Pours a dark amber color which shines bright red when held to the light. About a 2 finger head lingers for quite some time

Smells really sweet with lots of fruit apples and figs and grapes

Taste is sweet and malty with a warm aftertaste

Medium body with decent carbonation. not overpowering at all

This is a good desert beer i think i'd like to enjoy this one if i was relaxing on the back porch after a big meal watching the sun go down. I'll keep this one on the list until the next time that happens..

This is a pretty good beer. However, it struck me as sort of like a bock - overly cerealy with a malted milk ball sweetness. It had some nice redeeming qualities, but I couldn't get past the sweetness.

Color was dark but brilliant. Head was medium sized bubbles of consistent size, kind of like that of a macro lager. Aroma was earthy and roasty with some sourness. Flavor was sour (which was good) but offered an overly sweet unpleasantness with too much malt. Mouthfeel was clean and pretty good.

I would weakly recommend this beer. I had this bottle at Paters Vaetje ("Monk's Casket") in Antwerp.

Clear deeply brown colored beer with a heroically tall brown head. About as dark as coffee.

Sweet smelling with a lot of fig and dark preserved fruit aromas. Grape and apple scents with an edge of apple brandy to it. Basically this is all fruit scents.

The taste starts out sweet and fruity with a woody aftertaste. Mild fig and raisin flavor and a trace of apple brandy. One of the milder flavored Quads around.

Mouthfeel is good.

Not a bad beer but one in a style that has quite a few top beers in the world in it. Not a bad beer but Gouden Carolus Carolus D'Or is cheaper in the same place I bought this and a superior beer. Not bad but there are better.

Had this Quadrupel for a while in the refrigerator, but tonight (07/09/2008) as the temperature fell to 17° Celsius I decided to have this non-summer beer. Quads need to be drunk almost warm, slowly, and with the right food. "Parmigiano Reggiano" and "Salalme a grana fine" always do the job.
So this belgian shows a deeeep brown dress topped by a magnolia foam vanishing in a few minutes. At nose this is simply great, with all you can expect from a good quadrupel: chocolate, caramel, dark fruit and some yeast. Mouthfeel is good too, creamy and enough tick with a slight prickly carbonation. Taste is alcohol up front but what follows is again deceived and hidden by the carbonation. But as it warms and carbonation decreases the good things are revealed: a bit of sweetness, the right dryness in the finish and a smooth maltiness in the middle.
Drinkability is still good despite the 12% ABV, and I'd like to have another.
A very good beer, a good pair for some robust flavors, but for sure behind the holy graals of Quads (Westwleteren, Rochefort and St. Bernardus).

A: Pours a nice deep hue of brown with a full fluffy two finger head. The retention is good with a solid cap hanging around for the duration. Some spotty lace noted.

S: Nice blast of malty goodness. Big on caramel malt with some strong underlying grains. Brown sugar and dark fruits come next in a bold way. Very nice.

T: Similar to aroma. Big sweet malty goodness right from the start. The dark fruits come out along with some yeast. In the finish there is a touch of spice.

M: Medium in body with lively carbonation.

D: It's an wonderful after dinner or late evening sipper. Would pair up nicely with a cigar.

12 oz Bottle poured inot Duvel tulip glass. Pours a murky deep brown color with a nice thick tannish head. Head sticks around for a while and leaves a nice sticky ring of lace.

Initial smell was overpowering medicinal / alcohol smell. Initially poured very cold and the alcohol was very evident - to the point of being unattractive. Allowed the brew to warm to room temp and alcohol subsides a bit - but not too much. Found nice figgy sweetness and malts in the nose, some caramel too.

Taste was again harsh initially due to the spicy alcohol, which sterilizes my palate to any complexity this brew might have. I battled with this brew in the beginning but in the end we came to a truce and I really began to enjoy it. Sweet caramel and toffee notes when it warms. Figs and ripe fruit come to mind. The last 5 sips were absolutely fantastic, more complex than a Roc 10 at the same stage. Meduim bodied and dry finish. Alcohol warms the core with this one.

I think this brew could be a real contender to the Roc line... Unfortunately the alcohol was way to evident and knocked this brew down for me. Maybe this brew needs to mellow a few years in a cellar to bring out more flavors to mask the alcohol. Drinkability is poor due to the evident and burning alcohol.

Poured ( I drank this around 70° f due to unusual circumstances) out a dark amber color, it was almost black and was topped with a slightly tan head about three fingers thick and very fluffy, but it quickly thinned out into a thin ring around the glass. Thee was quit a bit a yeast on the bottom of the snifter. The bottle also kept on foaming and the head just kept pouring out of the bottle (something new for me, I had never seen this before). There is some very active carbonation; it has a very floral aroma that's sweet and fruity, there is a strong alcohol aroma as well. Its warm on the tongue and very smooth, there is a very faint bitterness to it on the sides of my mouth, it is spicy has a fairly thick body. It leaves a dry aftertaste in your mouth and the alcohol is really evident, but it is not too overwhelming. I will be trying this beer again, and even drinking it at a higher temperature than normal its pretty good.

A careful yet vigorous pour easily produces a three-finger thick, lightly browned, dark tan colored head. The beer is very dark, deep amber, concentrated brown color that shows a brilliantly clear, dark ruby hue when held up to the light. The aroma is a mix of fruity plum, warming alcohol and sweet spice notes. The nose reminds me a bit of molasses rich ginger bread, some touches of cane-rum soaked raisins, dried figs, Brandy fusels, and fermented prune juice. Spicy notes of clove, a touch of ginger. Buried in the aroma towards the finish is a nice, toasty malt character that contributes some browned biscuit like notes. An interesting, very fruity aroma that definitely shows its 12% abv strength, but somehow manages to come off as being fairly mellow.

Sweet tasting with some toasted, dark malt flavors. This is quite light bodied, especially given the strength though I wouldn't quite call it quaffable; it is close though and could certainly be dangerous if drunk by someone not realizing its strength. The ample fruitiness continues through to the flavor of this beer with notes of prunes, caramelized raisins, dried figs and even a bit of cherry (in that order of intensity). Some dry cocoa notes come through in the middle, but then the sweet fruit notes seem to sweet the palate clean of this flavor. Noticeable alcohol flavors combine with the other flavors to produce notes of dark Rum, caramelized Brandy and a touch of some tongue numbing, spiced liquors. Speaking of which, flavors of clove, turpene like allspice, light ginger and some pepper notes play a sometimes substantial role as well.

An tasty beer, while it does not do a good job of hiding its substantial strength, it never gets hot or harsh and the alcohol seems to integrate with the other notes. The light body on this brew was also quite nice, never cloying or sticky, yet still rich, satisfying and a sipping brew.

Opened a gusher. Thankfully I got most of it to gush into the glass and ended up with a dark brown/black beer with an off white head. The foam did disappear quickly though, leaving only traces on the surface.

Smells of malt, with both dark, roasty undertones and a fair amount of sweetness.

Taste is a very unique yeasty flavor, with many fruit esters. Tastes a bit like a more sugary version of Rochefort 10 actually.

Mouthfeel is a bit disappointing; not as robust as the color would make one believe.

Really pretty drinkable for what it is. My expectations were low after tasting the ridiculously sweet Malheur 10, but I was pleasantly surprised when the sugars were only slightly overpowering in this.

Dark brown/burgundy pour. Full, creamy foam. Nose could be better but it has some dark fruit, hops and yeast. Flavor is awfully complex, nicely malty with lots of Belgian character. Brown sugar, caramel, toffee along with hints of dark fruits. Well balanced . It's a really nice ale.

Poured into a Westy goblet. One finger of light tan head recedes pretty quickly with no lacing. Not really what you'd expect from a well-regarded Belgian ale.

Nice quad aroma of chocolate, banana, toffee, and darker fruits like plum and raisin.

Flavor is mainly a complex maltiness with touches of fruit and a lingering caramel finish. Some spiciness, probably anise also comes out mid-palate to take the edge off the sweetness.

Mouthfeel is a little thin and a little too carbonated for my taste. It's not awful or excessive but it could stand to be fuller. Luckily despite this, the mighty 12% alcohol is not detectable in the flavor. It does however warm the insides. Fairly drinkable for a monstrous beer.

A - Dirty red brown, with a huge head that turns into a thin cap of foam. Minimal lacing.

S - A surprisingly hop forward aroma, yellow pears, banana, slight chocolate aroma with just a hint of wet dirt. Very appealing.

T - Hints of apple skins, red grapes, figs, chocolate, mango and banana. A good dose of alcohol lurks in the background too. The aftertaste is mildly bitter which is kind of surprising for a Quad. Typically complex taste for a Belgian beer!

M - very spritzy, almost soda like with the fizz. I wish it was a little thicker on the feel.

D - You can't really judge this against a low abv session beer, knowing this is 12% abv. Full of flavor on every sip, its a beer to spend a whole night with.

Moderate pour into a chalice yields a huge loose tan head over an almost opaque dark brown-ruby body. Head fades quickly and disappears, leaving no lacing at all.

Smell is vinous boozy warm, dark roasted figs, burned sugar, raisins and dates, burned cherries, chocolate and coffee. Smells really good.

Taste is a bit down hill from the smell, as the alcohol dominates. All the notes from the smell, except the booze is very up front.

Mouthfeel is pretty good, though not as round as I would expect from a Quad.

Drinkability is definitely diminished by the overt booziness of this beer and the high ABV.

Not as thick and smooth as a Quad should be, and a bit too boozy. Smells great, though.

Deep amber-brown color, with little to no discernable head. Color is quite lovely though, quite substantive.

Heavy aroma of caramel, malts and spice, reminiscent of fine liquor. Some notes of dark fruit, such as dates and raisins, maybe some black cherry, with a perfumy undertone.

Mouthfeel is smooth and velvety, if not a bit heavy. Nice for sipping, especially at 12% AVB. Taste was, as other BA's have noted, somehow lighter than the aroma suggested. Still quite heavy on fruit and malt, and not nearly as spicy as I'd have thought.

I'd been wrestling with buying the 750 ml bottle of the Malheur 10, and saw this variety in a 330 ml bottle and bought it instead. After reading over some of the other reviews here, I think I'll be returning for the Malheur 10 to experience the balance that this one is lacking.

This variety is definitely worth a try, though I'm not sure I'll be tempted to have another.

Chocolate brown colour, little head, expirey 9/09. Thanks Boutip. Malt and some spicey yeast, with the emphasis on the spice. I taste ginger, balck pepper, star anise. Alcohol fairly masked. Above avrage mouthfeel, tasty treat that is expertly spiced malt. Very good Belgium.Dangerously drinkable.

Pours, for every conceivable purpose, jet black. Topped with a good-sized little dark brown head.

Aromas of dark fruit suggest a supple sweetness. Honey malt tones and a zesty alcohol whiff.

Oh my. Expected dark fruit is brighter in flavor with minor citric notes and glorious tangy sweetness giving a kind of tropical mangoish vibe. Seriously strong malt flavor with accompanying body has dense honey/molasses flavors not far removed from liquid malt extract. Then we have a fleeting alcohol bite, every bit as zesty as the aroma advertised. Secondary malt flavors are in the dry roast arena with both a woody sharpness and a powdery dullness. Stiff little bitterness grows as it warms, and the flavor levels out to display more eccentricities. The fruit element grows darker and takes on raisin characteristics. The alcohol is strong in this one.

Pretty good. It lacks the beautiful balance of Malheur 10. I was stoked when I saw this one on the shelf, but for the price of a decent wine, I have no desire to ever try it again. Again, the balance was not right on even though the flavor was little more than a trinity of fruit, malt, and alcohol. That said, I do love the experience of drinking a .75L bottle. Initial expectations & initial tastings vs. final thoughts & final feelings are always swayed by alcohol and the possible disappointment of spending too much on a bottle of 'beer'. Sometimes it is totally worth it, sometimes it is 'why'd I buy that?'. I'll stick to Malheur 10 from now on... why fix what's perfect?
