In draft at the source. Poured into Malhuer chalice/tulip. Creamy off-white head, high retention. Dark, dark ruby, almost black. Aroma, dates, light roast, almost chocolate sweetness. Taste creamy, coffee, chocolate malty sweet, creamy goodness. Excellent. Totally delicious.

Nice subdued nose of malt and chocolate of some depth. Some sulphury sourness in the glass as well. Dark fluffy magnolia head starts easy and massive but reduces greatly over a fairly prolonged period in time. Deep dark brown to look at with an Indian reddish hue.
Fairly carbonic start, fizzy, surprising and ends very dark, dry and earthy but that acidic body really dominates the palate throughout. There's some yeastiness to to the taste in there as well.
For many my 'score' will probably be seen as a bit harsh but for me this just lacks charisma and emotional intensity.

33 cl bottel poured into my lost abbey stemware glass

A: Pours a nice deep hue of brown with a full fluffy two finger head that dosn't stay very long The retention is good with a solid cap hanging around for the duration. Some spotty lace noted.

S: Nice blast of malty goodness. Big on caramel malt with some strong underlying grains. Brown sugar and dark fruits come next in a bold way. Very nice.

T: Similar to aroma. Big sweet malty goodness right from the start. The dark fruits come out along with some yeast. In the finish there is a touch of spice.

M: Medium in body with very lively carbonation.

D: It's an wonderful after dinner or late evening sipper

750 mL corked and caged bottle. label is confusing, it says "Best Before End: LB10/11".

poured into goblet, extremely dark brown, muddy. tan creamy head, that fades down to a thin collar. aroma is very nice as it warms, bold raisins, spicey, a little booze.

taste is not as boozey as the smell, even though it's 12% abv. notes of caramel, raisins, biscuity malt. some brown sugar, but not overly sweet. complex, but not overpowering. nice flavors.
medium body, higher carbonation. it could be smoother.

overall - a very solid Quad. Just not quite as good as the top class, like St. Bernardus 12 or Rochefort 10. not as smooth and easy drinkin as those.

An 5 ounce pour into a Gulden Drak tulip glass at the Horse & Hound in Charlottesville. From notes. Reviewed 8 July 2011.

A: HUGE head fills half the glass. Off-white/beige. Very dark and not susceptible to light. Some bubbles coat the sides of the glass.

S: Green apple Jolly Ranchers. Seriously. Not much else.

T: A bit flat/underwhelming. Having sampled a truly horrendous Maredsous Tripel (which I quite enjoyed from the bottle) on-tap at the same establishment, I suspect the bar is the issue more than the beer. Quite sweet, very big, noticeable alcohol. Periously close to reminding me cough syrup. Purple grapes. Not a great quad, but serviceable. I'd like to dry it from the bottle.

M: Meh. Disappointingly flat. Slightly sticky. I'd like more carbonation.

O: A good beer, that I'd like to try again some place else. At this juncture, I can't recommend it.
