Poured into a glass at my home. Solid, thick head that doesn't act like it ever wants to leave.
Pours a somewhat muddy brown, almost opaque, with just hints of cocoa highlights around the edges. Not the prettiest beer I've ever seen.
Smell is full of dark fruits like plums and raisins, some phenols, almost a maple syrup like sweetness, a little earthiness, and perhaps even alcohol. Almost a plum cobbler smell. Very nice.
Big time plum/prune in the initial sip, followed by a gentler malt sweetness. Lots of flavors bouncing around in here, from the malts, the yeast, perhaps even candi sugars. An interesting pipe tobacco flavor sneaks in at the end as well. Yet odd as it seems, it doesn't ever get too sweet. There's enough bitterness and alcohol heat to keep this from being sickly sweet. And it finishes surprisingly dry. There's no lingering syrupy aftertaste. Just that initial blast of plums and prunes, then a huge complexity of various flavors fighting for your attention, then it fades away quickly to make room for the next sip. Nicely done.
Remarkably light bodied for a 12% ABV brew, likely from sugars being added to dry it out. That helps make it much more drinkable.
Overall this is a fine quad. it has that Belgian flavor you'd expect, with the fruits, the phenols, the yeast esters, and ties it all together rather than leaving it a muddled mess. It isn't shy at all about announcing its ABV, but why should it be? Not every beer has to disguise its strength. I'm impressed with this, and would definitely drink it again.

Served in its glassware. Russet color with deep ruby tones. Small head cap.
Dark plum, phenols, nutty yeast, roast, dry raisin, and red grape. Delicate aromas with hidden complexity.
Dark fruity yeast esters with notes of candied plum, red grape, hard tack, and nuttiness. Note of artificial grape and raspberry jam are interesting. Great medicinal character. Some vinous notes. On the sweet side, for a quad.
Restrained booziness, wooly carbonation, full body.
Fantastic quad on-draft.
