A 500ml bottle with a BB of Aug 2014. Picked up a while back from Morrisons (obviously). Brewed for a supermarket range - this one comes with a story about the origins of IPA that supposedly involved 'watering it down' upon arrival in India. That's a new one by me.

Poured into a straight pint glass. A clear amber colour with medium carbonation. Forms a decent head of white foam that lasts for a few minutes before collapsing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of mild grain, light caramel malt, grass, faint ale yeast and subtle stewed hops. Not much going on, particularly for an IPA.

Tastes of caramel malt and grassy hops, with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of light caramel malt, fruity ale yeast, grass/hay, a slight pepperiness and stewed leaves. Well-attenuated, followed by a restrained, leafy bitterness upon swallowing. Harsh in the background. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with pleasant carbonation and decent body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of peppery stewed leaves, ale yeast and caramel.

A rather bland brew from Marstons - who'd have thunk it? Lacklustre looks, while the aroma and flavour are dull and insufficiently hoppy. Average body. Another 'traditional' IPA that plays it safe by leaving out the exciting hops. Uninspired; no need to seek it out.

500ml Bottle: BBD 31 Aug 14, poured into a UK pint sleeve on 29 Dec 13.

Good deep off-white head on a clear orange/old golden body: carbonation bubbles rising through the body clearly visible.

The nose has a caramel malty lead with floral hop notes arriving later.

The taste is also malt led, semi-sweet toffee and caramel flavours in fact. The hop content then takes over a little and the beer become bitter and drying towards the end of each sip.

The flavours hide the 5.8% ABV well and the body has enough depth to carry the beer along nicely.

This was a lot better than I thought it would be and for a fairly cheap 'supermarket brew' it was great value.
