Poured from a 650ml bottle. Pours an orangish brown colour. Nelson brewed one of the first bottled IPAs in BC, so it's interesting that their only now getting into doing a bigger double IAP like this. It was worth the wait, however. This is a fine example of this style that'd stand toe to toe with its US West Coast counterparts. The nose is an exotic array of tropical fruit, melon and citrus notes. The flavours are even more amazing: cannabis, fruit basket/fruit cocktail. There's a big, bitter finish. Excellent carbonation. Great beer.

650ml bottle. The next in the organically produced big bomber series - hopefully this outdoes that pithy chocolate stout from a few months ago.

This beer pours a clear, medium bronzed amber colour, with two skinny fingers of bulbous, kind of thinly foamy dirty white head, which leaves a few sparse imitations of coral reef lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of warm bready caramel malt, black pepper, stewed oranges, blunted pine needles, and leafy, herbal liqueur. The taste is more lightly toasted caramel/toffee malt, a slightly astringent meatiness, soft white pepper, mild stale orange rind, leafy, weedy forest floor detritus hops, and a well-behaved booziness.

The bubbles are generally rather neutered-seeming, but do all right in their day job, the body a sturdy medium weight, and actually quite smooth, the hops not really up for a tussle. It finishes off-dry, the gutted caramel and leafy, herbal hops sailing on a rising sea of booze warmth.

A so-so DIPA, the weight is there, the malt more or less up to the task, but the hops have a great deal of difficulty getting their shit together - herbal, citrusy, and floral, sure, but never in concert, and always manifesting in a rather lackadaisical manner. Just too unfocused, and not nearly worthy of mentioning in the same breath as the best of BC, at the very least.

A: Copper with an off-white head, great retention & lace.

S: Very dank aroma with hints of marmalade and toffee.

T: Very dank hop flavour (Simcoe in the boil), hints of tropical fruit, citrus & pine; Biscuity malt with hints of toffee. Bitterness could be a little more assertive.

M: Smooth, moderate body has a light acidity and an off-dry finish.

O: A nice brew, though perhaps a bit gentle for a DIPA.

Appearance - Pours a dark amber with two fingers of frothy white head.

Smell - Piney hops, caramalts, tropical fruits.

Taste - Predominantly malt flavoured in comparison with the hops, along with tropical fruit essences. Light bitterness in finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall - A DIPA that is more dominated by malts than hops. The aromas meet all the requirements, though I'd like to have more hops (perhaps a bit of dry hopping will help out).

650ml bomber poured into tulip 28/11/13

A slight haze in a light copper body a few tiny bubbles feeding a dense finger of foam that falls to a thin film after a few sips leaving a couple random patches of lace

S big tropical nose, apricot, peaches, pineapple juice, orange and grapefruit, a little pine, very faint dry cereal, slightly floral, and caramel with just a hint of booze

T more malt, lots of lemon and lime rind, more pine, the tropical notes on the nose are toned down but still there, tasty enough but the nose is a fair bit better

M medium leaning towards full, nice bitter bite, lots of grit, soft carbonation and just a little heat, feels like a DIPA

O I'm pretty happy with my 5$ bomber, the nose didn't quite follow through in the flavor but still a solid DIPA all around

I'm very surprised by this one, I've had lots of crap from Nelson and expected this to be something similar. I rather liked this beer and the price point is hard to beat, this will be the first brew from these guys that I buy a second time.

Ok I give props to Nelson for stepping up their game with a Double IPA since they seemed to be living in the past with a standard non changing lineup give or take a summer and winter seasonal. I liked this beer but found the hops to tasted a little confused and never coming truly together to make it really work. The mouthfeel was there and so was the malt backbone but the lack of really strong hops presence and cohesion let the beer down a bit. A good changeup for Nelson but not within the top 5 DIPAs in BC.

Bought two 650 mL bottles for $6 each in northeast BC. I have found Nelson Brewing to be hit-and-miss with its beer: loved some, didn't care for others.

This has a clear but hazy copper body and a solid, soapy-creamy beige head. It has the aroma of grapefruit and fresh grass. I find a heavy citrus hops and bitter but with a nectar taste. It has good, appropriate carbonation and some alcoholic (8.2%) taste with a medium body.

This is one of those 'loved-it' beers. I found the first bottle to be just delicious: great first impression. I was able to judge the second bottle a little bit more soberly but still found it great.
