330 ml. bottle. Brown colour, with red hints when you hold the glass to the light. Big off-white head that takes its time to fade. Smell of dark fruits, prunes, raisins, chocolate, toffee and vanilla. Strong body, good carbonation, thin and creamy palate. Taste of chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits and maybe a hint of cherries. A warm alcoholic feel aftertaste, and a great beer, imo.

I'm somewhat reluctant to review this beer, because after reading others reviews, I believe the bottle I had must have been bad. The date on the bottom says 19/11/11. I wouldn't expect a beer of this caliber to go bad after less than 3 years, but what I got was bad.

Appearance: Bottle, 750ml, poured into a chalice. No head at all, even with a slightly aggressive pour on the 2nd half of the bottle. Murky brown, it doesn't let any light through besides on the very bottom of the glass, and only slightly, a dark rusty orange. No head, no lacing, no bubbles, so i can't comment on the color of the head.

Smell: the smell is good. Upon opening the bottle and smelling my first thought was "I'm going to like this". It had the characteristics I like in a Belgian. Yeast, dried dark fruit, candi sugar, caramel, minimal alcohol smell.

Taste: The taste was good as well, when i could get past the very odd mouthfeel. Similar to the smell. Raisin, yeast, bready, roasted malts, brown sugar, some spice (cinnamon).

Moutfeel: terrible. I would associate the mouthfeel more with a juice than i would a beer. absolutely zero carbonation. very sticky although it is slightly watery. just weird. if the taste wasn't as good as it is, this would definitely be a pour-out.

Overall: I will buy this again, but will make sure the date is a little more recent. I'm not sure what happened, but something is wrong with this particular beer. I've never seen a belgian with no head, no lacing, and no carbonation. If this had no taste, and i was only going off mouthfeel, i would say juice, then wine, then flat soda, then flat beer.

Poured a brownish body with massive head and lace patches on top of classic Belgian aroma of yeast, some citric orange notes, some dark fruits like raisins/figs and touch of sugary sweetness. I like this beer and it's a good representation of the style with simple hints of dark fruits, a softness in the light to medium body thanks to yeast, actually a little sweeter than usual (minor chocolate notes?) and finishes crisp with a touch of hops. That being said, I would consider this a "beginner" beer for those who haven't had this style before b/c it's not complex and hence not a favorite of mine.

750ml bottle, corked. Poured into a Tripel Karmaliet tulip. Served at 52F.

A: Off-white/tan head, size depends on pour. Body is a brownish-ruby, some light passes through. The head diminishes in short order, with almost no lacing.

S: Smells very organic, like wet grass, with a distinct caramel malts undertone. The Belgian yeast is clearly present in the aroma. Some note of the alcohol.

T: Sweet maltiness up front, finishes with a roasted malt character. Dark fruit flavors are present, raisins and dried dates come out. Taste is very earthy in character.

M: Dry with a lot of carbonation, the body is light-medium is weight on the palate. The carbonation and body combine for a very balanced feel.

O: The aroma and flavor are outstanding for a budget Belgian beer. The appearance is slightly above average, but everything else about the beer raises its profile. It is not a standout, despite the rating, but if you're in a pinch for a good Belgian, you won't miss with this one.

330ml bottle, poured into Kasteel chalice. A: Very dark mahogany, opaque, large tanned rocky head, lots of lacing, top marks, can’t be improved on. S: Usual fudge, molasses and brown sugar expected from a BSDA, but also had and malt and hop content associated with a good Franconian doppelbock. T: Fudge, dark chocolate, cranberry, finish long, malty with some bitterness all balanced out by a surprising hop content. M: Smooth, creamy texture, light body, minimal carbonation. O: Great look, lots of layers, easy on the palate, ticks a lot of boxes.
