Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a dark iced tee color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of dark fruits, kind of sweet. Taste is caramel malts, a bit sweet, dark fruits, alcohol well hidden, very easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer worth seeking out.

Poured from 750mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich and cloudy brown hue; pretty attractive body. Head poured just a thin layer of tan foam despite a relatively vigorous pour, and what little there was didn't stick around long.

Smell: dark fruits, raisin, tobacco, and a bit of sweet maltiness. It's got a little bit of an oxidized character, a lot like an old ale. A little bit unrefined, but basically quite good.

Taste: richly fruity, again with cherry, raisin and tobacco. Finish is a bit musty, but in general it's pretty good. Finish is a little bit thin, though.

Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a very limited carbonation. Not at all creamy, but somewhat smooth.

Overall: this is a decent beer, but a little bit half-baked. A little extra carbonation would be good, a lot would be better; frankly, I would have expected a bottle refermentation. Worth a try if you are a big fan of the style, but otherwise not a good starting point for Belgian darks.

I'm somewhat reluctant to review this beer, because after reading others reviews, I believe the bottle I had must have been bad. The date on the bottom says 19/11/11. I wouldn't expect a beer of this caliber to go bad after less than 3 years, but what I got was bad.

Appearance: Bottle, 750ml, poured into a chalice. No head at all, even with a slightly aggressive pour on the 2nd half of the bottle. Murky brown, it doesn't let any light through besides on the very bottom of the glass, and only slightly, a dark rusty orange. No head, no lacing, no bubbles, so i can't comment on the color of the head.

Smell: the smell is good. Upon opening the bottle and smelling my first thought was "I'm going to like this". It had the characteristics I like in a Belgian. Yeast, dried dark fruit, candi sugar, caramel, minimal alcohol smell.

Taste: The taste was good as well, when i could get past the very odd mouthfeel. Similar to the smell. Raisin, yeast, bready, roasted malts, brown sugar, some spice (cinnamon).

Moutfeel: terrible. I would associate the mouthfeel more with a juice than i would a beer. absolutely zero carbonation. very sticky although it is slightly watery. just weird. if the taste wasn't as good as it is, this would definitely be a pour-out.

Overall: I will buy this again, but will make sure the date is a little more recent. I'm not sure what happened, but something is wrong with this particular beer. I've never seen a belgian with no head, no lacing, and no carbonation. If this had no taste, and i was only going off mouthfeel, i would say juice, then wine, then flat soda, then flat beer.
