Served in a tulip glass. Genus 3 is a natural rust color; ruddy brick, and hazy like a wheat beer. The tan-colored head that develops is very thick, creamy, and shows great retention and will stick on the sides of the glass, showing off the hopped nature of this beer right away.
The aroma is a splendid mix of characteristics, from the Galaxy hops to the cherry wood barrels, you get a diverse smell each and every time you lift the glass to your lips. It has notes of peppercorn, fruitcake, butterscotch, lemon, and leafy herbs.
The palate shows off the dry-hopping better than the aroma, with a long lasting lightly bitter finish. The taste is a compilation of chestnut, bready malt, chocolate, beans, ripe plums, and grassy hops. Very well-balanced, and shows off the qualities of both the hops and the base beer quite well. The carbonation is perfect, with a solid medium body and a gentle, smooth texture from the carbonation and body combination. This beer would probably do just as well off a firkin as well.
This is not an "Old Ale." Neither of the brewers call it that, but "Stock Ale" doesn't seem to be a style category on the site yet. This project/collaboration was created by two Maryland brewers (Flying Dog and Evolution) so that they could design a beer that would work well on it's own, or under the specialty treatment of each of the brewers individually. Flying Dog's specialty seems to be dry-hopping, and I must say that this worked out well for them. I am excited to try Evolutions barrel-aged version.

Some (many?) bemoan all of the Snow Days this winter, but I say "Embrace the Madness!" I have a plethora of backlog, especially in terms of bottles, here at Chez Woody and if I am to be confined to quarters, let it be with beer. In fact, I am carrying on smartly with Collaboration Ale Afternoon as an inspiration to others who may be in a similar predicament.
From the bottle: "A collaborative ale by Flying Dog Brewery and Evolution Craft Brewing Company"; "Genus 3.Secondary dry hop"; "Natural Selection is one of the cornerstones of modern biology and now, Maryland craft beer."; "The collaboration began with Genus One, a stock ale and the origin of species. Genus Tow was brewed and aged in cherry wood barrels by Evolution Craft Brewing Company. Genus Three, the final common descent and what you now hold in your hands, was brewed and dry-hopped with a ground-breaking amount of Galaxy hops by Flying Dog."; "'Good People Drink Good Beer' - Hunter S. Thompson".
Once more, I employed a gentle pour as I have no idea how long this beer has been aging in my kitchen. The resulting skim of wisps was to be expected, but I remain a fan of the servers' trick and now I had a finger of foamy, light-tan head with moderate retention. Color was a hazy copper (SRM = >17, < 22) with ruby highlights. Nose smelled boozy, like Scotch. Lots of alcohol heat along with a malty sweetness. I really wonder how some of these beers might fare in the distillation process. Mouthfeel was medium, perhaps thinner than I might have expected, and the heat was immediate on the tongue. Flavors of dried, dark fruit were dominant along with leather and a slight lemon zestiness. Man, no wonder I set this aside. It was like a day's worth of drinking all by itself. I might not have selected this naturally, but I am a sucker for Flying Dog's Ralph Steadman art, plus I am always intrigued by these collaboration beers. Finish was dry, hot actually, with a maple syrup sweetness that lingered. Phew! I felt as though I had grown a prehensile tail and I was ready to begin swinging from the treetops. Wow.

Served in a Tulip.
Pours a very murky, muddy brown with a two fingers of light brown head. Fades to a film over the beer. Leaves spotty lacing all over the glass
Very malt smelling beer with slight hints of dark fruit, oak, cherry, sweet licorice.
Taste is sweet malty dark fruit on the front palate, mouth coating maltyness midpalate, and a sweet clean finish likely from the dry hopping. Hopping comes through more as it warms.
Mouthfeel is fairly rich with medium carbonation.
Overall this is a nice beer that has some complexity that comes through as it warms. Reminds me of a wheat wine the more I sip. I wouldn't seek it out but if i see it i would buy another one for the cost

Poured chilled in ale glass.
A: very dark amber; really nice, creamy head; good carbonation; great lacing
S: complex hoppy aroma; dark, musky, and appetizing
T: very rich, complex IPA-style beer; it's all in the hops in a big way; nicely complementing the booze (7.6%); dry hopping makes a very vibrant beer with subtly tapering aftertaste
M: rich, creamy
An outstanding IPA. Get it while you can.
