My first Oktoberfest of the season. This Marzen poured a dark amber with a two finger thick head of dense tan bubbles which pulled back fast. Very scant if any lace left after each sip. A nice steady stream of tiny bubbles billowed forth from the etching in the bottom of my glass for the duration of this brew.
The smell was thick with the various German malts used. Very grainy, slightly smoky. A faint fruit note could be detected in the background. I noticed that a few others wondered if this was an ale due to the fruitiness on the nose and in the flavor.
The flavor was heavy on the malt. Flavors of Vienna and Munich malts with a toasty edge. A respectable hop twang in the finish balances out the fruity notes that are present in the flavor as well.
The mouthfeel may be the saving grace of this brew. Nice and crisp, medium bodied.
All things considered this is a very drinkable brew. Not very complex, but for the style not bad at all. This is a good choice as a session beer this fall. Just enough flavor to keep you interested without it being too overbearing. Decent example of a domestic Oktoberfest.
