It's early November, but I still have a few Ofests knocking around my fridge, score! This was one of the better US offerings this year and it deserves a review.
2010 batch, 12oz bottle.
A. Poured into a trusty Spaten half-liter mug. Goes in a rusty-water with haze, a trusty, small, and long lasting toasty head caps. Light active carbonation.
S. Quite good, really... sweet bready "real" German malt here, notes of toffee, rough barley and mild apple esters support. Rather authentic and has that fine toothsome, hairy-chested woodsman note you get from good German beers. Hm, that sounded a lot less gay before I typed it out. Oh well. Dogtoberfest is bold and generous, no weak smelling beer here!
T. Crisp and grainy, this is pretty much right on target... lots of German (Munich?) malt flavor going on, slightly singed and crunchy, reminds of a good loaf of hearty bread with apple butter. Toffee and semi-sweet malt notes here too, but a bit drier (and better) than most US versions. The malt gets pretty nimble and fun after a while, there is a good bit going on here. A hint of Noble hop bitterness is welcome, the finish is cool and engaging and fall-earthy. This doesn't play to the lazy overuse of sweet American malt either, and the yeast has cleaned it up nicely. This is good.
M / D. Medium-thin body, supportive carbonation, finishes gently malty and 'beery'. A little rough in the finish, the malt isn't as harmonious as it could be and there is left a slight sour apple aftertaste which thankfully is drowned out by most everything else. In spite of this, Dogtoberfest is really easy to put back. Hmm...
I was quite pleasantly surprised by this one; a real authentic tasting Marzen from one of the bigger US breweries is a very welcome thing. Cheap ($8 a 6 pack here) and a superb buy. I'll be on the lookout for more next year!
