Poured from 12oz. bottle into a pint glass. No date on the bottle.

A: Very nice looking beer, reddish gold amber, on the darker side of the IPA color scale. Finger of cream colored head, good retention, leaves a nice thick lace.

S: Pine. Lots of pine. Smells very piney, citrusy with a hint of hops, not a lot of depth.

T: Tastes exactly like it smells. If you like citrus and loads of pine with a bitter hops finish, you'll love this. A little too heavy on the pine and bitterness for this palate.

M: Lighter carbonation, goes down smooth and easy.

Not the worst beer I've ever had, and I'd certainly take it over the common American domestics (Bud Light, etc.), but certainly not the best. I haven't been overly impressed with any of the beers in the Flying Dog sampler pack so far, and probably won't be picking up any more Flying Dog brews again for a while.

Pours a clear copper color with a very light haze and a creamy 1 finger off white head that was full of bubbles and faded slowly, leaving great creamy lacing sticking to the sides.

Smells of juicy floral hops up front, piney hops, flowers, herbs, grapefruit, toasted grains, sweet malt, caramel and biscuit; the fruity and citrus wave comes quickly and then lets the floral hops and grains wrestle for attention for an overall nice light IPA aroma.

Tastes of floral hops, herbs, pine cone, piney hops, malt, toasted grains, cracker, bread or yeast, very bitter grapefruit, lemon, citrus hops, grass or husk, and then some light caramel, and maybe even some roasted nuts; the bitterness is high and the hops seem to be tamed by the malt and grains, and lighter than what I expected based on the nose. This seems to have balance, but also seems a little off for an American IPA. The flavor is good, but not great.

Mouthfeel is light a crisp, with mild carbonation, a light to medium body and feel and a real easy flow for very nice drinkability.

Overall it was good, but the flavor lacked any real hop punch to bring this above good/above average. Certainly worth drinking, just not a hophead special.

Out of the Flying Dog sampler case, dated 4/12/12.

Poured into a pint glass, this is a pretty dark IPA. An intriguing red-gold. Half finger of eggshell head, decent retention, and a fair amount of lacing.

The smell is pretty deep and leans towards the piney side. Other than that, it's hard to say, but there is a faraway malt background, and just a tinge of citrus.

I'm guessing this is a pretty fresh case, because the taste is just awesomely hoppy. Resiny bitterness on the front, with a sweet to citric, dry aftertaste. The mouthfeel works really well with the taste. Prickly carbonation, dry on the finish. Not too thin, and it doesn't turn into a mouthful of foam either.

If it has anything working against it, Snake Dog is not the most complex IPA. But hey, it's remarkably drinkable, given its ABV, it's nice and bitter. I will thoroughly enjoy the other 3 in my case. Wish I had more.

Poured from their 12oz bottle...

Appearance - Poured 2 fingers of lite amber colored bumpy cumulus clouds, color of the ale is a beautiful transparent orange copper color. Nice lacing after the session.

Smell - Ripe sweet grapefruit and candied pine.

Taste - Starts semi-sweet citrus flavors, orange peel and white grapefruit, this quickly begins to bitter and pucker and ends with piney hops. There is a malt backbone way in the background that provides some balance, but I don't get any sweet or carmel flavors here at all, this is a citrussy hop-forward IPA. Alcohol well hidden.

Mouthfeel - Almost medium mouthfeel comes from plentiful and somewhat potent citrussy and grassy hops. Then a medium, nearly foaming carb cleans the tongue and any slight citrus sweetness is replaced with the more bitter nuances of the hops. Finishes a touch dry and bitter.

Overall - This is a pretty solid IPA. Nothing spectacular here, but a nice and pretty well balanced IPA. A solid offering from Flying Dog.
