Black with hues of ruby. Seems clear, can see throught the blackness. Thin tan head, and slightly carbonated. Thin but well laced.
Caramel, as well as bitter roasted malt. Theres a hint of treacle present, as well as a smokey, tobacco like scent that blends right into earthy and grassy mily bitter hops. Smells pretty interesting.
A bit of a letdown after enjoying the aroma of this brew. The malts are difficult to notice in this beer. Can taste the bitterness of the roasted malt mixed in the finish with the smokeyness and the earthy hops, but theres nothing up front. Theres also a hint of dark fruits in there.
Theres just not a whole lot going on here, except for a bitter finish. More of a malty character would help to balance this one out, and just a touch more carbonation would have been nice.
This beer is easy enough to tip back. Its good enough, but not quite sure what it really wants to me in my opinion. This would be a decent enough session brew on a cool evening like we have going on here. Would also be a decent introduction to the porters and stouts for someone ready to try some really dark and tasty beer styles.
