Looks like a classic porter, dark with a thin lacy head - perhaps a little too thin, yet a solid cream color atop the dark brew. It's not as dark as many porters I've enjoyed but it's close.
Smells like a classic, no-frills porter. It's kind of a basic feeling here, straightforward. Nothing unexpected, yet definitely far into "good" territory.
It tastes like a porter should. Not how they always are, but how it should be. A balance of smokey, warm flavors and just the slimmiest hint of coffee. Or maybe it's chocolate. In any case no element overwhelms.
Feels absolutely fine going down, if a bit carbonated and tingling on the tongue - especially for how little head appeared with even a moderately aggressive pour.
It's a taste and feel that will go down easy - and willingly - but nothing above and beyond the call of duty for this style. I'm already a fan of porters and this one is basically a solid, recommended example.
One last caveat: I definitely was influenced in my purchase by the "Good beer no shit" phrase on the bottle - and the accompanied explanation of the brewery's first amendment court battle to approve it. Flying Dog certainly has a feel for the story setting behind some great beers.

aroma is mainly vanilla accompanied by some toffee, smoked malts, dark chocolate and espresso beans. Appears black with a magenta hue and thin white foam. Taste is mildly dry with bitter black coffee overtones, assertive toffee, creamy nougat, dry chocolate and some faint hop bitterness. Overall, pretty well rounded and different porter. Very dry all around with some alcohol coming through as it warms.
