Pours a light straw color with a good amount of citrus and sweet malt on the nose. 2 fingers of foam that did not last, slight lacing. The scent of apples and pineapples. It had a nice hops character and good potential but it finishes like fruit punch. The body is weak and the soda like carbonation was the lion’s share of it. How disappointing.

I love this beer. It has a hint of clove and banana but it's not overpowering.

I do wish it weren't as heavy. It's not really that heavy, but the sweetness would pair better if it were a bit lighter. I love this beer in the summer.

Overall a great beer. I can't drink it all the time, but I'm pretty excited when I find it in a bar.

Appearance: Cloudy orange. Initially a two finger white head that becomes a small murky layer of tiny bubbles. Lots of tiny bubbles. Slightly darker than typical hefeweizens. Some lacing but it retreats back into the beer

Aroma: Yeasty banana breadiness. Cloves. Some spiciness. What you'd expect but nothing groundbreaking

Taste: Tastes a little tart. Super crisp wheat. Coriander and cloves. Banana and bready yeasts on the back palate that lingers. Again, nothing new here. Does taste truer to form than most American hefeweizens so bonus points there

Mouthfeel: Crisp. Smooth despite the abundance of carbonation. A tad watery. Very quaffable

Overall: One of the better American hefe's I've tried. Very sessionable for any occasion. Especially good for warmer weather. Granted this has nothing on true German hefeweizens but I would get this again

Served into a hefeweizen glass:

A- pale goldenrod color, that is translucent. Half a finger worth of foam, and no lacing.

S- Clove, banana, and wheat. Also has a yeasty smell as well.

T- Earthy pear like taste, that leads to some clove, and wheat. Ends with some banana and almost tastes like pumpkin spice at the end.

M- Light body and high carbonation.

O- A great session beer. Nothing too complex and out of the ordinary, but still decent.

Not normally a huge fan of hefeweizens, but with the transition from winter to spring, wanted to try a new one so picked up a six pack of this at a reasonable $7.99/6-pk. Pours a yellow-orange with a slight foamy head that dissipates pretty quickly, not leaving a lot of lacing on the glass. Smell is really good - coriander, orange peel, clove. Carbonation is JUST about perfect -- maybe a little too biting, but that is really nitpicking as this a very solid, tasty beer.

Poured into a pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy pale-to-golden yellow with one-finger, white, fizzy head that lasted a minute. Not much lacing.

S: Smells like fruit salad made with apple juice. Bananas and pineapple and mango.

T: Moderate sweetness and light bitterness. Lots of banana up front. Clove is in there too.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation.

O: I was prepared to be let down by the appearance of this beer, but it turned out to be rather tasty. Overall, slightly above average Hefeweizen.

Poured into a pint glass, it has a straw colored body with a inch of foamy fizzy head that quickly dissappears. The smell has a banana and bubble gum coming from it. The taste is bananna with a hint of clove in it. The mouth feel is really good, def a easy drinker. Overall a good hefeweizen.

Serving type: Bottle

Bought it on a whim, as I've always had pretty good luck with Flying Dog. Pours an even, golden color. Nice head that vanishes pretty quickly. It feels like heavy carbonation, but for some reason I don't mind it. The label warned me to expect banana and clove, and they weren't lying. I'm not normally a banana fan, but this was a pleasant surprise. The smell and taste of both was present. It was very refreshing, and I easily put away a 6-pack pretty quickly with a friend.

I poured this bottle into a fluted glass. I always like the way that the Flying Dog bottles look. The original art is impressive for each new bottle.

On the pour I got a decent amount of foam that went away very quickly. The beer is straw colored.

The nose had quite a bit of belgian horse blanket to it. I enjoy the banana esthers.

The flavor is pretty good. I like the bubblegum in the background. The horse blanket continued in the body.

This is a pretty good example of a hefeweizen. I need to pick up more of this next year.

Pours a translucent yellow color that strikes me as a tad thin for a hefeweizen. It's topped by a mammoth, rocky white head spawned by atypically large carbonation bubbles. You'd be hard-pressed to get me to describe a beer's head as being too big, but this really is pushing it. You almost have to work your way down to the actual beer beneath the foam.

The aroma smells mildly of banana and clove--typical hefeweizen fare, but less elegant than the elites of the style. The flavor matches the aroma. Once you fight your way through the froth and the biting carbonation, you find a pedestrian hefe flavor that is passable, but hardly great. Banana and clove are there, but a bit muted compared to my expectation. Some hop bitterness in the finish is slightly more present than usual as well. The most noteworthy element is a nice apple peel flavor that hides behind the banana. This is an acceptable attempt at the style, but a little too watered down and overcarbonated for my liking.

Pours a very pale, golden-yellow color with a moderate haze throughout. Small, wispy head that vanishes quickly, no lacing to speak of. The smell is very crisp and refreshing, full of biscuity wheat and fruity esters. The taste hits with a big dose of carbonation on the tongue, followed by apples and apple skins, a bit of esters, and a solid wheat background. The flavor is very sweet, light, and refreshing. A hint of clove can be detected if you're really searching for it, but it isn't as powerful as in other hefes. Lots of carbonation with an overall thin body leaves a dry finish.

Overall, a decent beer. Crisp, refreshing, and very easy to drink. Nothing to write home about, but worth a try, and definitely session-able.

A: Pours a slightly cloudy yellow color with a fingers worth of head that fades very quickly

S: Big notes of banana and clove are the focus, along with some light malts

T: Follows the nose, with the banana being the most forward followed closely by the clove. Wheat malts are really the only other thing that stands up to the banana

M: Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and slightly chalky

O: A good American example of a hefe, with the usual banana and clove suspects in the mix. Easy drinking and sessionable. Worth a try

Poured from a bottle into a wheat glass.

At first pours a clear golden color with lots of fluffy white foam. Swirling the dregs and emptying them into the glass creates the signature haze of this hefeweizen. Thick white stable head. Aroma of banana and slight clove as is expected, slightly fruity. Taste follows suit with big banana flavor up front that fades to a nice fruity sweetness and a crisp clean finish. Very heavy carbonation that meant I needed to pour VERY slowly. This leads to a very crisp beer that goes down very easy. Mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy. Light to medium in body that would allow me to drink way too many too easily. An excellent hefeweizen, I will definitely be having this again.

A- This beer poured out a nice gold color which was clear, until I shook the yeast from the bottom of the bottle. Make sure to do this because it added all that good yummy yeast a good Heff has (a murky cloud of goodness).

S- It has a nice yeasty quality to the smell with banana, clove, spices. Not supper effervescent.

T- I pick up the same qualities on the taste as the smell with banana, clove, spices. I also pick up some faint lemon in the background. The mouth feel is medium full and it has an average amount of carbonation. The aftertaste is not quit up to a supper god Heff.

O- This beer is a nice refreshing beer that goes perfect on a hot summers day. For the price it is worth trying especially if you want to try a reasonable priced Heff. Give it a try and have a nice night.

A: Very cloudy with little head. Dark orange color.

S: Subdued banana, lots of clove and phenol spiciness. The yeast character is amazing. WOW!

T: Same as the nose, very little banana. Very bready, sweet, and phenolic. All of the flavors are harmonious. Amazing Hefe.

M: This beer seemed a little on the thick bodied side which I enjoyed. Would have liked a little more carbonation.

O: This one definitely ranks in my top 5 for hefeweizen. Highly recommended!

Served in a bottle at The Clinton Social in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a very hazy pale straw yellow in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall fizzy bright white head that quickly reduces to a very thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of wheat, yeast, citrus, and just a hint of clove.

T: The taste of this beer is very similar to the smell, moderate amounts of wheat with lighter notes of yeast, citrus/lemon zest, and the faintest hint of clove.

M: Slightly more than light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Thin and watery.

O: Refreshing and easy to drink, a nice summer brew to enjoy on a warm evening.

The beer pours a hazy hazy straw yellow color. Very minimal head which is a little disappointing for a wheat beer that has every reason to be able to have great head retention.

The beer also is a little disappointing in the aroma sector. I can detect the slightest bit of banana but any other aroma is covered up by the wheat aroma.

The beer makes a much stronger showing for flavor. It starts off nice and sweet, full of yeast and bread an finishes with a nice refreshing clove like spice.

The mouthfeel is full and creamy, really coats the mouth very well.

Overall this beer is decent. It would be hard to go for over Dry Dock or even Sierra Nevada options but it is still a solid beer.

Review from 5/2010 notes. Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Somewhat opaque orange brown with a thin white head, some lacing. Wheat, light wheat beer spicing and slightly sour aroma. Taste is sweet wheat, lemon, light clove and banana with a dry wheat finish and a hint of hops. A satisfactory, but not exciting hefeweizen.

Poured from the bottle into a wheat ale glass.

Barely a white head is made that gets a finger tall at the most, settles to a faint thin sudsy collar. Body is a good mix of orange unfiltered and yellow lemon hues. Rising carbonation can barely be seen.

Nose is weak. Faint orange, mild estery sense, a bit of an odd dry grain and very big sense of wetness. Doesn't seem so impressive.

A real thin body on this beer, with an almost seltzery mouthfeel. Very light orange and flattened carbonated soda. Mid palate fills with lots club soda like character. Finishes clean with a good lingering sense of witbier like orange strangely.

Overall, well may not be a fav style of mine, where is the wheat density and malt chewiness? This isn't doing it for me.

12oz bottle, pours a cloudy yellow with a tinge of orange. Thinner than expected head that dissipates quickly and leaves little lacing. Thick aroma with banana, clove, bready yeast, nutty, wheat - smells like banana bread. Tastes are similar to the aroma - banana, yeast, clove, spice, nutty wheat. It's full bodied, smooth and creamy. Finishes slightly peppery with a prickly on the tongue. Overall, good example of the style. I was hoping for a thicker head in the pour with better retention, otherwise there wasn't much else to complain about.

Appearance: Pale yellow, a little bit hazy. Pours a thin, pure white head.

Aroma: Fresh floral aromas, citrus, quite typical for a hefe weizen.

Taste: Quite mild, a little bit sweet; perhaps sweeter than a typical hefe weizen. Some floral honey flavours, more so than the citrus which you might expect.

Mouthfeel: Medium carbonation, light to medium bodied.

Overall: A fairly average wheat beer. Not bad by any means, but might not be able to compete with its German counterparts.

This is my first review of a wheat beer. I don't normally drink them but this one came in a sampler so here goes....

In Heat Wheat-from Flying Dog Brewery

Beautiful pour. Nice head. Clear. At first glance it looks like a lager.

Then in the nose: soap (the kind you wanna eat), citrus, flowers, linen on the line.
Th first sip goes down as expected, complimenting the aroma. The back-end brings with it a distinctly wheat-beer warmth in keeping with the style.

This beer makes my mouth feel great. Smooth, a little thick, foamy, spicey and thirsty.

This is a great beer to share with a sassy girl on a summer day.

A- Cloudy pale straw body with a bubbly bone white head.

S- Clove, pepper, wheat and citrus.

T- Citrus and bubble gum are the most noticeable tastes, with some banana too.

M- Thin, light bodied, crisp and high carbonation.

O- The wheat does not come through that much, but this is a good light bodied beer with interesting flavors.

Appearance - Pours a hazy, faded orange with a thick white three finger head. Good retention. Resulting lace is thin. I'm noticing a rather alarming amount of granule sized sediment settling into the bottom of the glass, about a pinkie-sized worth and I'm wondering... 'is that normal?'

Smell - Strong notes of tart green apple. Love the smell, though not entirely appropriate for the style.

Taste - Follows the nose. Tart green apple flavors. Subtle notes of banana and clove spice behind this.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium body, with some fairly aggressive carbonation. Crisp, tangy bite. Leaves the lips feeling tingly.

Overall - Loved it, but I'm thinking this is a candidate for a re-review. I don't see anyone else noting the predominant tart green apple flavors I experienced, so I'm thinking this is a contaminated bottle. If it is, I've lucked into a wonderful one.

... And on a 2nd review, nothing has changed. I'm now thinking this beer is supposed to be tart.
