Poured from a 12-oz. bottle into my Terrapin pint glass.

Appearance: Very dark red, no haziness. One-finger white head emerges after a second or two and quickly diminishes. Still, there is some lacing.

Smell: Very interesting.... It smells almost like liquor - very alcoholic and sweet. Malts are obvious but damn near take a back seat to that strong alcoholic scent.

Taste: Malts and alcohol rush at you, and then, almost as an afterthought, some hops announce themselves rather quietly. Still, they don't go unnoticed, and go a ways towards balancing out the intense malt/alcohol sweetness this beer packs. There's not much to disguise the high alcohol content, which isn't really a bad thing, but it's worth noting.

Mouthfeel: I'll say it's good, but this is easily the least important aspect of this beer. It's not thick, it's not thin; it's just where it needs to be, which is 'ignorable but adequately un-crappy'.

Drinkability: Ah... drinkability. I enjoy drinking this, I really do, but barley wines aren't really my thing, so I feel unworthy to judge this. I will say this is my favorite barley wine, and I'd probably drink more than one a given drinking night, if I had more than one.

Appears a dark opaque crimson times amber. A thick white cap slowly fades, and scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of cherries, honey, toasted barley, fresh bread, citrus, and pine sap.
Taste is of the aromas with a honey malt sweetness, followed by ripe fruit, bitter hops, and doughy yeast.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, chewy, viscous, and sweet with hot alcohol hanging on in the finish.

Caramel, dates, malt, toast, buckwheat honey, liquid yeast, citrus, and sweet sherry, can be found on this long nose.

Front is rich, creamy, full, robust, with some citrus hops on the sides of my tongue. Plums and chocolate on the long balanced finish.

Overall; My mouth salivates every time i have this brew. Personal pick for best English style barleywine made in the U.S.A.. Balanced with great length. Looking forward to tasting after aging a few years. (vintage 2011)
