Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck with a scary dog theme artsy label. The word “vintage” where the freshness date should be, lay a few down to see where thing one goes.

Appearance: Weird looking, great retention, but weird because it is so damn rocky with the tiniest bubbles that stick on the glass. Colour is mahogany going on black, very dark, with a shining clearness to the light.

Smell: Yeasty and buttery with a rhubarb and spicy ester alcohol, decent nose but just not melded well.

Taste: Smooth and viscous. Full in the mouth showing a big body, moderate carbonation after a semi-hard pouring. Malty all the way, sweetness upfront flows from caramel to bready with a fruity underbelly. Alcohol is there but deceives a bit, warms the body soon after and provides some estery a fruity content. Hops leave a marked twang and distract the taste buds away from the sweetness momentarily. Touch of spiciness creeps in from the alcohol and light grainy astringencies double it up for the finish.

Notes: A must a cellar temp, drink this cold and feel its wrath. Also, make sure the yeast does not make its way into the glass or you will fell sorry that it did. As soon as it warms up the malt flares out the with pounding sweetness that wrestles with the hops and graininess. Not overly impressive but good enough to give it a try if you are into strong beers and barleywines.

2011 Vintage

A- Brownish-amber with some transparency, just a hint of yeasty haze. No head to speak of, with just a few off-white bubbles on top of the body.

S- Sweet caramel malts, hints of dark fruits, slight nuttiness.

T- Really similar to the aroma, sweet malts up front with a blast of more sweetness, lots of caramel and dark fruit flavors, grainy bread. Any hops that may have been present have faded and this is a big sweet barleywine.

M- Big and sweet, but smooth enough for easy sipping. Low carbonation.

O- I feel like the aging made this one better, but it is certainly a big, sweet barleywine. The depth of the flavor is pretty good and worth a try.

A: Pours a dark amber hue with an off white head
S: Table grapes, juicy bubblegum, fresh mossy bark, burnt pineapple
T: Sharp red plum flavors, sweet malty notes, more bubblegum notes
M: Heavy mouthfeel (though not as heavy as a porter or stout), filled about 70% of the mouth
O: Big flavors, powerful brew, very drinkable, could put you under the table if you're not paying attention.
