Hmmm. I don't know what to think about this one. Maybe my first "English Style" barleywine.
A-It's very pretty with it's deep rose colored, almost clear hue. With a thick, creamy off white head. It quickly dissapates to a fine film on the beer but it leaves very good stringy lacing.
S-All I detect at first is fusal alcohol in the nose. And some faint dark fruits, that I anticipate will get stronger at it warms. Oh yeah, as it warms, the dark fruits get a lot more pronounced. Smells kind of like a fruit cake. Some fresh picked grapes.
T-Mainly dark fruits such as prunes. A good bitterness keeps it from being cloying, (just barely). It's very sweet. Very detectable fusal alcohol. Which is a big minus in my book. Could be very much more hidden. Actually gets a little medicinal in the aftertaste.
M-Full bodied, coats the mouth very well and lingers with fusal alcohol. Way too boozy for me. I've had 13%abv Imperial Stouts way smoother that this. The hot alcohol is very unatractive.
D-Because of the booziness of this one, I don't think I'll be having anymore of this. Kind of dissapointed.

Appears a dark opaque crimson times amber. A thick white cap slowly fades, and scattered bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of cherries, honey, toasted barley, fresh bread, citrus, and pine sap.
Taste is of the aromas with a honey malt sweetness, followed by ripe fruit, bitter hops, and doughy yeast.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, chewy, viscous, and sweet with hot alcohol hanging on in the finish.

Caramel, dates, malt, toast, buckwheat honey, liquid yeast, citrus, and sweet sherry, can be found on this long nose.
Front is rich, creamy, full, robust, with some citrus hops on the sides of my tongue. Plums and chocolate on the long balanced finish.
Overall; My mouth salivates every time i have this brew. Personal pick for best English style barleywine made in the U.S.A.. Balanced with great length. Looking forward to tasting after aging a few years. (vintage 2011)
