look: 4 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Light amber/red color with a 1 finger off-white head probably due to me

using a snifter. Some fine bubbles on the lower portion of the glass.

Aroma: Some nice caramel sweetness from the crystal malts. Not too much bitterness in

the smell, but there was nice pink grapefruit, peach, and other inviting fruit aromas and

esters.

Taste: Surprisingly nicely balanced. The bitterness was mainly in the aftertaste. Not as

much maltiness in the taste. The more recognizable flavors were the fruits.

Big sweet/somewhat bitter pink grapefruit, peach, lemon, and plum

(basically a cocktail of delicious fruitiness). The alcohol was also well hidden.

Mouthfeel: Medium and not too syrupy as some double IPAs (or in this case a

"double pale ale") can be. The carbonation helps the high ABV stayed restrained in the

back end of the palate.

Overall: This beer was a lot more drinkable than I thought it would be. The 85 IBUs flexed their bittering muscles but lost in the end to the matured fruitiness of the hop/malt combination.

Food Pairing: Salmon, grilled lean meats, mild or sharp cheddar and blue cheeses.

If you get a bottle that's not too bitter I'd try this with a rich fruit cake or pie.

Pours a clear copper with a finger of head that lingered for a decent amount of time. The nose had both grapefruit and hop notes. The flavor profile is relatively well balanced between malts and hops. The big flaw of this offering is the finish. The alcohol bite is far too obtrusive and unfortunately dampens the whole tasting experience.
