Appearance: Clear deep amber with a modest white head, slight scattered lacing, and slight carbonation.
Aroma: Very prominent caramel notes, some chocolate malt, as well as grapefruit and orange hops. In all, the aroma is well-balanced, and over-the-top.
Taste: Caramel and chocolate malt manage to overshadow the intense hop flavor, but only just. As the taste progresses, the sturdy malt bill vies with the hops for supremacy, which ultimately culminates in a draw. The sweet alcohol is also prominent in the taste from start to finish. The taste draws to a close with lots of caramel and bitter cocoa arrayed against a very strong hop presence and a notable undercurrent of alcohol.
Mouth feel: Very soft, smooth, full, with the slightest hint of carbonation.
Drinkability/notes: Spectacular and over-the-top, perhaps not true to the imperial IPA style, but excellent, nonetheless.
Presentation: Packaged in a plain twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Undated bottle at 40 degrees into imperial pint
Aroma very faint citrus
Head Large (7 cm), frothy, off white, slowly diminishing
Lacing OK, rings about 1.5 cm wide around glass
Body nice medium yellow, clear
Flavor starts without any hints of anything, just somewhat bitter; no malt, no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl. Leaves a chalky aftertaste
Palate medium, watery, carbonation soft.
Disappointment. No distinct flavor, just a light bitterness. Not a particularly good offering from an excellent brewery. I last tried this in 2009 – still not very good, just OK.
Somewhat better than BMC offerings.
