So I got Neil Young’s Live at Massey Hall on my speakers and I notice this empty Tripel Karmeliet goblet staring at me from across the room… there is only one way for this to end… I reach into my fridge and behold! There’s that month old bottle of Flying Dog Double Dog that my buddy Joseph gave to me. Thanks, Joe!

So into the glass it goes! I can immediately smell a hefty malt and citrus hop presence leap out of the glass as I pour. A head of various sized bubbles springs up and begins to settle, leaving a bit of lacing atop the muddled orange beer. (As I drink the Double Dog, the lacing reveals itself to be spotty and fun to watch.)

The smell on this is quite bold, but basic. Sugar, lots of it, a strong citrus hop nose and more than a hint of alcohol rise from the glass. The hops are all over the place… resiny but mostly citrus and acidic. The website proclaims this is “dry hopped with an insane amount of Cascade and Columbus hops” and they ain’t kidding. The sweetness brings to mind something thick and syrupy, perhaps an Eiswine or Madeira, I dunno. But enough sniffing around, time to taste this thing…

Well. After a huge gulp of this, I can say that Double Dog is one of the more warming beers I’ve had in a long time. This stuff goes down smooth and tingles, eventually settling to a warm glow on the back of my tongue and all the way down my gullet. Pretty impressive. “But” I hear you saying “what does it taste like?” Well, for starters, a truck-load of citrus hops. Bitter grapefruit, lemon and a leafy hop character smack the palate around a bit before revealing some caramel and honey-bun like sweetness. The malt is there, but mostly the raging hop flavor kicks everything else out of the way to assault your mouth. The finish is dry and quite bitter, nearly medicinal like quinine or something equally unpleasant. Exhale and you’d think you’d just been munching on a handful of hops. The Flying Dog website proclaims 85 IBUs, but whatever they have in here, it’s super bitter. No session beer here…

The mouthfeel is a bit sticky, but well carbonated and thankfully not harsh. The hop flavor coats the mouth and packs a bitter punch. If you love hop bitterness this is going to be right up your alley. Did I mention the bitterness?

Less drinkable than say, Dogfish 90 minute, this is a rough, wild, bitter hop bomb. Ultimately tasty, but certainly not a session beer and not something I’d strive to keep on hand. Double Dog is basic, but what it does it does big. Recommend for the hop-head. I think I'd like to have another... in a few months.

A - Dark orange. 1" head that lasts a few minutes, with some lacing.

S - Piney and aromatic.

T - A very well-balance ale. A little sweet, piney, herby, hoppy. ABV is well-hidden.

M - Not much carbonation, but it's a very smooth and mellow feel.

O - a nice ale, quite drinkable.
