Poured from glass into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a medium amber color with a one finger white head. The head fades relatively fast to leave a good level of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is big of herbal and citrus grapefruit hops. Mixed with these are lighter notes of a bready smell as well as some faint tropical fruit aromas of pineapple and mango as well as some flavors of a bubblegum like smell.

Taste- The taste begins with a bready quite malty flavor. Mixed with these flavors there are some flavors of a mango and tangerine sweetness. There is also a hop flavor of a more herbal nature in the initial tastes that bring a moderate hop flavor to the tongue. As the taste advances the fruit flavors remain relatively constant while the hop flavor grow more intense with a grapefruit flavor soon overwhelming the herbal and becoming the dominant hop flavor. At around this time a light yeasty flavor also comes to the tongue In the end this grapefruit hop is rather potent, but in many ways fits the tropical fruit flavors rather well to leave a nice bitter and fruity flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the creamier and thicker side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. Both are very nice for the style and match the hop and fruit/malt profile nicely.

Overall – This is a fairly nice yet easily drinkable imperial IPA with a good blend of hop and fruit flavors.

I am not the biggest fan of Belgian style beers, but the added hops to consider this an India pale ale are a nice touch. The beer is well balanced and not too heavy, but it is very strong and did not go well with dinner. The flavor profile was slightly confusing.

Bottle poured into Samuel Smiths Organic Wheat Beer Glass

A - Thick white head, took a while to reduce and left some white lacing on the glass.

S - Hemp, Citrus

T - Malty and Caramel, Bitter hop finish, not too dry on the aftertaste and the high alcohol content is hard to detect until a lot after

M - As I said, not a dry aftertaste. The strength of the alcohol does come along after a while but only as an afternote. It's actually quite a supreme aftertaste and the belgian method and yeast comes through.

All in all a really good beer.

I was disappointed in this beer. I have had it in the past, and thought that it was pretty decent, but for some reason, it didn't taste all that great this time around. It seemed pretty fresh, with a 2014 brew date.

The smell is... strange. I read lots of references about "citrus" and "grapefruit." To me, it smelled a bit sour with... I know this sounds crazy... a hint of burning hemp. Kind of like sitting in the nosebleed section of an indoor arena during a Pink Floyd concert, circa 1977.

The taste is also kind of sour rather than hoppy. This one definitely leaves an aftertaste, not unlike the taste some of us sometimes have when we first wake up in the morning.

I am glad that I only purchased a single bottle of this one this time around. I don't know... maybe this bottle was from a bunch that wasn't stored properly for awhile before being refrigerated at the retailer. I am willing to come back to this one again after some time to give it another shot.
