Pours amber with ruby hints, crystal clear (filtered) with an inch of bone-white head replenished from micro-bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass.
Smell is almost smoky with those wonderful Belgian yeast notes that add rising bread and sharp, familiar abbey ale scents atop rich honey malts. There is a fruit ester here I cannot place. Pears? Raisin? It may be a very subtle twang of overripe bananas.
Taste starts all sweet honey and biscuit but then the hops and yeasts assert themselves, ending with an long, drawn-out alcohol burn made all the drier with hints of black tea from the hops. The finish keeps rolling and developing, finally falling off with a last little kiss of pine resin.
Big, buttery, smooth mouthfeel. Way too drinkable at over 8%. And totally worthy of representing Flying Dog's 20th anniversary. Imagine what they'll create for their 40th?!
