Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #55 (August 2011):

Nothing but Simcoe hops (70 IBUs) in this brew, which are used for both bittering and aroma-enhancing properties, and known for their often fruity, piney and woody characteristics. Cloudy golden with a massive creamy white head and impressive lacing. Dank, musty, pine-laden, citrusy nose that has a calming effect if inhaled deeply. Super creamy and light on the palate. Biscuity sweet malts. Earthy. Woody. Warming alcohol. Sticky, oily hops. Tons of pine, resin, grapefruit, citrus rinds and spice. Sticky as hell. Bone-dry with a hint of chalky aspirin. Leafy finish. This is a must-try for hopheads and standout amongst other “single hop” attempts.

A: Poured an amber color w/ good lacing into a non-descript tumbler that i found in the back of my bro's kitchen cabinet. I wasn't gonna complain of the lack of glassware since he was supplying me this tasty Simcoe treat.

S: Glorious hop aroma. A citrusy floral bouquet. One of the best I've had.

T: In your face, citrusy, piney hops, but w/ a good balance of sweet malts. Bitter finish, but not overly bitter to were you could drink more than one. But @ 10% ABV, a 2nd may kick your butt w/out even knowing it until too late!

M: Medium body feel.

O: A great hop-bomb! Love the single-hop idea. This beer regained my trust in Flying Dog as a quality brewer. Definitely will try this again if I can find it.

Thanks BrewerDan23 for sharing this.

Hazy apricot with a thin ring of foam. SIMCOE! Pine, orange and a little grainy sweetness. None of the onion-y, catty, stinky Simcoe aroma that I dislike. There is an aggresive bitterness with a lingering hop resin. Grapefruit peel flavors adds astringency in the finish which is also very dry with a rubber band kind of aftertaste. This is a slightly sweet beer at first then very bitter in the end.

Super fresh DIPA single hopped with Simcoe no less, the drink before date is 076A14, drink before the 76th day of 2014 I can handle that. Pours a deep crystal clear copper/orange hue with white head brilliant and shining with the light. Perfect intricate lacing left behind. Aromatics give me orange zest, tropical fruit, a touch of alcohol presence and sweet candied malt sugars. Flavor brings layered alcohol with grapefruit notes, big malt presence of sweetness and drying hop layers, it's intense and wonderful at the same time, the 10% alcohol by volume can't run and can't hide. Sugary hops, big hop flavor earthiness, bitterness, rough alcohol seem to collide on the palate with the first few sips and this has no plans on letting up in fact it wants to add some orange/grapefruit peel zest to the mix. Kind of like brushing your teeth with Pine Sol in a good way...I'm in, and I'm drinking and enjoying it. Mouthfeel is full bodied resinous hop oils from the front to back, ample carbonation carries it way too well. Overall a big hoppy single hopped beast of a beer from Flying Dog most will enjoy few will be able to get past the huge beer aspects this brew has to offer.

Got this one from my buddy Crabbicuss.

Poured a light golden bronze color with quite a bit of fluffy eige head on it.

Smell is full of hops. Great aroma!!!

Taste is very hoppy throughout with some citrus and pine notes in the finish.

Mouthfeel is light-medium and very smooth and easy to drink.

Overall a really good beer that I wouldn't mind drinking again.

A: pours a clear amber gold into my DFH snifter with two fingers of off white head with great retention and moderate lacing.

S: floral and citrus like. Good malt base.

T: strong hop flavors over bare the tongue. Citrus and grass and flower like. There is no hiding the alcohol, its out there and loving it.

MF: heavy resin like body with great carbonation and a bit warm.

O: GREAT IIPA! Love the flavor but hate the mouth feel.

S: Pine resin, grapefruit pith, bready malt with a caramel backbone.

L: Light hazy, light orange, dusting of white head, good lacing.

T: Sweet bready malt with a subsquent pine backbone. Medium high pine-sol like bitterness leading to a caramel sweet backbone.

M: Medium mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

Ok IPA, pretty ordinary to be honest.

Bottle that pours a slightly hazy golden/orange color with an average-sized white head.

Aroma is huge skunky piney hop aromas. I'm even sensing some floral and even fruity notes. Weird, considering this is a single hop and should have a defining characteristic.

Taste is the same. Piney and resiny hops. Great bitterness that Simcoe is known for. and even some slight tropical/citrusy flavors creep in the finish. This beer doesn't hide the 10% as much as the El Dorado did but it might because of this being a little less complex with no malt backing, pretty much ALL hops. It's a good flavorful brew. Not overly sweet, Nice medium body, smooth, soft and has a long bitter finish.
