Bottle code D76A14 at 40 degrees into imperial pint
Aroma citrusy, primarily grapefruit
Head large (8 cm), off white, frothy, slowly diminishing to a 2-3 mm layer with thick froth islands
Lacing abundant but irregular
Body medium yellow with some hop haze
Flavor begins with a burst of slight astringency typical of pink or red grapefruit, although the grapefruit flavor is absent; no alcohol, no malt, no diacetyl. The astringency quickly fades to a chalky finishing feel. A slight alcohol glow begins in the stomach.
Palate is light to medium body, watery but refreshing, with soft carbonation .

Overall, an easy drinking IPA with the potential to sneak up on one.

Poured into a shaker pint: Two fingers of lumpy, glistening custard head over transparent golden orange body with plenty of nucleation.

Smells of dank, pithy grapefruit, a little peachy, slightly minty, some clementine, with a subtle but sharp sticky sweetness.

Taste follows, with that thick grapefruit, woody pine, an almost waxy flavor like hard cheese rind, wrapping up with a quick sweetness like lemon cookie followed by stiff alcohol, verging on overpowering but not quite. Yeah, this leaves a dead zone on my tongue.

Full-bodied, resiny, but surprising light & easy-drinking before leaving that tacky residue around my mouth.

I was really looking forward to this, & it delivered. Simcoe may very well be my favorite "spotlight" hop, & while this didn't have quite the catty note I was anticipating, it didn't disappoint. I've had a few of the Single Hop IIPAs from Flying Dog, & most have a cakey character that's not found here. One of the better DIPAs I've had lately.

On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, herbal, and alcohol flavors on the finish. There is a high amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is quite boozy and has a somewhat harsh hop bitterness that lingers after each sip.

A-yellow-orange with a sticky cream colored head

S-citrus and weeds with a bit of booze to it. it has some strength to it, but no one flavor really comes out strong. it really just smells like it has a high ABV.

T-comes in with a good bitterness and flavor of aged hops. the bitterness really sticks for awhile. it has a good lasting after-taste of fresh hops. definitely has a kick to it as well.

M-medium dry carbonation with a dry finish

O-definitely a strong and interesting IPA. I love the concept of using a single hop. even if I'm not the biggest fan of this beer, I do enjoy drinking better understanding the simcoe hop. i would recommend others to try this, i just wish i was able to try all the series in one sitting to get a better understanding.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance
Golden orange with 1 finger of head that dissipates quickly. Good clarity with low carbonation.

Nose
Mango, papaya, dank greens, tangerine and candy sugar. Has just a touch of cat piss.

Taste
Musty dank greenery, wintergreen gum and pine. Lighter notes of tangerine, mango and papaya. Thin candy sugar maltiness with notes of lightly toasted bread. Finishes with a lot of resin lingering on. Picks up hints of onion.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, oily, smooth and dry.

Overall
A great hop perhaps best used with other varieties. It tends to get pretty resinous by itself. Overall, this is still a well executed beer.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Golden tan, yellow, with a 1 inch creamy head, and plenty of lacing.

Smell - Straight forward orange, grapefruit hop kick. A little pineapple along with some minor herbal notes.

Taste - First sip is very strong bitter hop punch. Lots of pineapple, orange and grapefruit along with a lemon and herbal flavor. Very warm, alcohol is picked up from first to last drink. Some caramel malts come out near the finish.

Mouthfeel - Big hops coats the tongue along with alcohol. Palate picks up more hops, some herbal notes, and some malts. Aftertaste is hops, and alcohol.

Overall - Pretty much as expected. All hops and alcohol. Not much else only minor malts are noticeable. Impressive that its a one hopped beer and yet so strong and aggressive. Don't look for a balanced, multi flavored beer with this one.
