I was looking forward to taste this beer since it was announced.
The beer poured a slightly foggy old penny copper gold. Very attractive color. The head builds about two fingers thick and has some retention, if undisturbed ( hard to do sincevthe beer is so inviting ). After it dissipates it leaves some lacing on the glass.
Smelling the beer, you would think you are near a smokehouse. Yet not overpowering snaky notes, some honey, caramel and maybe some roasted malts.
Taking the first sip takes you right into beer heaven. Up front you have the gentle, yet decisive smokey flavors, met in the middle with a blend of fruit, caramel, honey and malt.
At the finish some fine hop selection balances this beer to perfection.
What a beer! If it would not be so pricy, I would make that my daily "nectar"!
Certainly a must have for the beer advocate!

Poured from the bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy dark amber color with a half finger of creamy off white head. The head sticks around pretty well and leaves a nice layer on top of the pour.

Smell: Slightly smokey and sweet from the malt. I'm getting just a hint of hops and some dark fruit.

Taste: Smokey up front, but this still has a fairly light flavor. Some fruity notes along with yeast and mild hope. The smoke sticks around through the finish with a dark fruit note and a slight bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth, tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: As the name suggests, this would be a very nice barbecue beer. Not too heavy given the abv, I'd have another given the chance.

I had this beer poured from a bottle (purchased at Westridge Liquors, rt. 40 in Frederick) into a pint glass...

A: Light amber, clear color, small off-white colored head...

S: Slight smoke, not like a rauchbier, but more subtle, some light earthy hopping, and a good dose of caramel malt...

T: Malty, malty, malty. Tons of malt up front, sweet caramel malt, with a light biscuity flavor, and a slight hit of smokiness...

M: Lightly carbed, could use a touch more...

D: A really okay beer. Not great, but an easy drinker for sure. Would absolutely pair well with some smoked or roasted meats, which I will try at some point. Cheers.

Brewed with cherry wood-smoked malt, collaboration with Volt Chef Brian Voltaggio.

Beer is amber to copper with a mild haze and a lazy with no lacing and low carbonation.

Aroma is strong with smoke and wood, smells pretty nice.

Beer is thin in body with a strong dry smoke finish. As far as smoke beers go this is a good one. I enjoy the mild sweetness up front with a dry smoky finish. It gets a little harsh at the end with the more you drink but I'd have it again. Would make a great cooking solvent.

Bottle. Pours a deep opaque copper with a big white head.
The aroma is peat-smoked malts alcohol. Slightly fruity.
Taste is smoky with a touch of sweetness to it. Dried fruit flavors come to the surface.
Very smooth and ceamy. Soft carbonation and medium mouthfeel. I've tried this on draft and found it to be a better drinking experience from the bottle while grilling some meat. This beer pairs well with grilled meats but otherwise doesn't stand up on it's own.

A - Pours with one finger of off white foam on top of a clear, golden brown body. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves light lace.

S - Toffee, dark bread, and a bit of sweet smoke.

T - Sweet, bready malt up front with some toffee. Some light smoke and meaty notes in the middle and a finish of caramel, sweet, peaty smoke, and a lingering, acrid bitterness.

M - A medium light body, average carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - This is an odd beer, it doesn't have much in common with the traditional German smoked beers, but manages to do pretty well... Until the finish. There is a sharp, acrid bitterness that turns the smoke harsh in the aftertaste, if this wasn't present it would be a pretty good beer, but the harshness is hard to ignore.

A: thin head on a amber with slight golden hue body. nice lacing.

S: sweet caramel malts, slight mesquite note. very clean aroma.

T: sweet caramel malts and breads, mesquite and smokiness throughout with a slight burning sensation to the finish. earthy hops as well but these are mild

M: medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall: I think the beer is well made for what it is rying to be. It captures enough of the smokiness to make this amber ale different without going overboard or being a full rauchbier which some people may not enjoy.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a copper-orange hue with a thin, 2-finger, white head that quickly dissipates in to a wispy lace leaving no trail down the glass.

S: Smoked caramel and bacon aromas present here.

T: Similar to the smell there is a definite smoked caramel flavor here. Lots of complex spices here including a bacon taste.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Interesting beer. Nothing I would grab again but it was worth a try.
