First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA
Dark brown-black color with a small foamy tan head. Aroma of dark malts, toasted grains, unsweetened cocoa. More of the same in the taste, dark malts, bitter cocoa, toasted bread, some mild leafy and earthy hops, and a bit of mineral from the oysters, that was really more implied in the mouthfeel than in the taste, as with most oyster stouts (in my opinion). Body was mid-range, about right for an English-style, so no real complaints there, though the roastiness added a little oomph. Pretty good overall.

A: Pours a deep mahogany with subtle garnet hues and a thin, quickly receding khaki mousse.
S: Aromas of caramel, molasses, roasted grain, dark chocolate, coffee, and vanilla bean are underscored by a faint brininess on the nose.
T: Briny oyster notes are pronounced on the entry, but are soon layered among notes of roasted grain, coffee, dark chocolate, molasses, toffee, caramel, and vanilla bean. A combination of oyster, caramel, chocolate, and coffee carry over into the finish with a quick kiss of earthy, herbal hops just before the fade.
M: Medium in body and dry with crisp, pronounced carbonation. In many respects, this is more like a porter than a stout. It is easy to drink though. I could see this pairing well with oysters.
O: This is not a bad little stout. Oyster stouts generally don't do it for me, but this one really isn't bad. As a matter of fact, it's nice to see such an obscure style get some love from an American brewery.

I had low expectations for this one, so I was pretty surprised with it.
Appearance: FDB always has really cool bottles. The color of the beer itself is a very brown/blood red color. Sorta like Jagermeister.
Smell: not a bad smell. Don't think this is weird, but I kinda think it smells sorta like grilled meats.
Taste: a very surprising taste. Kinda spicy, kinda heavy, sorta syrupy. Not the best. Not the worst.
Mouthfeel: a little syrupy and heavy but still goes down pretty smooth
Overall: a decent beer. Way better than I thought it was gonna be. Worth a try.
