Pours thick, very dark brown, with little carbonation. I had to give it a pretty hard pour to produce a little mocha colored head, but that dissipated quickly, leaving little to no lace. Again, looks pretty thick.
Smells of dark fruits, damp vegetables and roasted malts. The coffee comes through not as coffee per se, but more like a nondescript dark, bitter smell. Fruit dominates the nose much more than your typical coffee stout.
On the palate, dark, sweet fruit hits first, followed by chocolate and rich, smooth espresso. Not as complex as some imperial stouts, but a palate-pleaser nonetheless. Booze is pretty well hidden, revealing itself only in a little dry, slightly minty astringency.
Mouthfeel is full, soft and round. Though not as big and full as the viscous pour would lead you to believe. Again, not a luxurious as some, but definitely fits the imperial stout bill. Nice, lasting chocolate bitterness.
Overall, this is a big, tasty stout that packs a punch. A nice pairing of sweet, dark fruit and bitter chocolate espresso flavors.

[12 oz. NR bottle] Pours a tan 2 finger head. Very dark.
Smells delicious, like coffee, dark roasted malts, with slight cocoa nose. picking up some strong alcohol notes through the heavy roasted malt bill. balanced though.
Dark and dank malts shine through with coffee and moderate alcohol warming up front (8.9%). Definitely a sipper. mouth feel is moderately heavy and silky, but slightly thinner than most imperial stouts I've had. not a bad thing. lower carbonation, but right for style. Let this one warm up to get more complex flavors.
I pick up heavy coffee flavors and slight caramel on a nice silky finish. sweet with some lingering alcohol. Overall a pretty good beer from Flying Dog. I'd like to try the vanilla bean added rendition some day.

Yes. This is outstanding and my favorite style of beer. Rich in flavor and aroma, dark roast coffee. Pretty damn bitter and finishes like chocolate cake, with the coffee always present and really delicious. Not quite on the level of Wake n Bake, but I should've grabbed a sixer when they were available.
