I had the opportunity to try this on tap at Comet Ping Pong in Washington DC.

A: Dark brown borderline black. There was a nice head that maintained throughout the beer.

S: The beer had a very slight cherry smell in addition to a slight malty smell.

T: The beer was smooth with a slightly roasted malt and cherry taste on the front of the pallet. Towards the back of the taste there is a very faint cocoa smell.

M: The beer had the consistency of a lager.

O: This was a decent beer, I would drink it again but it certainly was not one of my favorites.

Served in a pint glass at Kramerbooks. I have also previously tried it at RFD with a similarly unpleasant experience.

Appearance: Not really a "black" lager, more of a dark red-brown. Light khaki head.

Smell: Smells kinda like bad milk, honestly. If I had had this just once, I might have chalked it up to an infected batch. But both times I've ordered this, I get a very "off" scent. No cherry aromas to speak of.

Taste: Follows the nose, unfortunately. A little bit of toasted malt behind sour milk, with virtually no cherry flavor at all. Just a TINY bit of tartness in the back. Flying Dog says it's brewed with cocoa, but I get none of it. Not very flavorful at all, mostly just water with an off taste.

Mouthfeel: I will give it points here for a fairly refreshing lager feel, with light carbonation that kept it smooth.

Overall: Either there's something about this beer I don't get, or Flying Dog screwed up, or their distributor screwed up. I would not recommend this beer.

Had this beer on draft at Mahaffey's. It had a nice, dark look with about a quarter inch of head. The beer clearly smelled of cherries, though it was in no way over powering.

The taste was malty, smooth, with the cherry hints coming in at the end. The beer laced well in the glass. Overall, a very good schwarzbier that I will definitely be having again.

Had this at the Brewery taphouse last night. Lagers never excite me but this was a really nice example with a twist.

It pours really dark like a moonless night but when held to the light it gives off this deep rich mahogany red. Nice tight 1 finger off-white head recedes to a perfect ring of bubbles around the glass. Great lacing!

Very subtle hints of chocolate, roasted malt and cherry in the nose. A taste confirmed the smells. All the flavors combined nicely and not one thing was overpowering the others. Nice roasted malt with very light hints of cocoa and finished with delicate cherries.

Medium bodied, really smooth with good carbonation.

No bottles for this one, so find someplace around MD/DC with it on tap and give it a try I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
