Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

A real nice fluffy light tan to light khaki head, three fingers tall, sitting on a nice red copper brown body. Nice and large, a booming red body, crystal clear, virtually no rising carbonation, looks very nice.

A nice faint sticky malt, and some spicy brown sugars. Faint English hitting bitter and hint of tea aromas. Pretty solid.

Palate comes with a bit subdued tea warmth. Malt thickness and caramel richness a bit watered and toned down. Comes almost crisp finish, which really enhances the toasty aromas of brown bread and blackened crust. Muted caramel and sugars, with big toasty and dry finish

Overall it's a doable red ale, but misses some of the malt thickness and sweetness I am expecting.

12oz single poured into a standard pint

A-clear amber color with rising carbonation bubbles. A solid 2 fingers of off white head. Lacing through out.

S-nothing over the top. caramel malts, some earthy bread

T-pretty mild for Flying Dog, but an appropriate Irish style ale. malty, smooth, caramel

M-medium bodied, carbonation dies down as it warms, very smooth dry finish

O-I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. smooth, malty, easy to drink. nothing extraordinary but I would definitely reach for one of these again...maybe its the 4-leaf clovers?

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a clear golden color with some trails of carbonation rising to the head. The aforementioned head is about two fingers high, off-white in shade, and rather frothy-looking. There's a bit of inconsistency to the texture that seemingly suggests it has (at least) a mild hop bite. Lacing down the glass is rather splotchy.

S: Hrmmm, at first this smells a bit chocolaty, but once it opens up a little, it becomes very earthy. VERY earthy. Not just from the hops, but from the malts as well. Subtle touches of herbaceous and caramel notes add to the experience some. In its own way, it's quite pleasant, albeit slightly mild.

T: A subtle wave of earthen hop bitterness hits the palate immediately. By no means is this a brutal hop bomb, but it helps give this beer a decent sweet/bitter balance. Problem is, there isn't much else to this apart from earthiness. That, and the malt notes seem a bit...funky. Not the good funk, either. For the record, I'm not picking up clovers in the taste.

M: In spite of its fullish body, it seems well-attenuated (translation: dry) enough for me to drink this easily. The carbonation stops just short of being sharp, and that too makes it chuggable.

O: Eh, it's pretty damn uneventful. This beer reminds me that while Flying Dog makes some great stuff on occasion (The Truth), they've also got a few stinkers in the line-up (hi there, K-9). Natch, this is closer to the latter. Or maybe I just don't like this style that much - I mean, there's little to differentiate this from *shudder* an ESB to me. This one isn't going to be repeat purchase.
