look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours a clear amber-tinged golden color; while the head is not huge, it does leave quite a few traces behind

Smell: Grapefruit, pineapple and floral tones

Taste: Opens with the tropical and citrus elements found in the aroma and combines that with a touch of the sugary malts; in the middle, an oniony bitterness builds and lingers through into the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: The citrus and floral tropical fruit flavors in this DIPA are really delicious though I am a bit put off by the bitter onion character that lingers in the aftertaste; still, quite a good beer and one of the best I have tasted from Flying Dog

Best By Oct., 31 2014. FD is one of the dwindling number of breweries which still uses a code and a best by date rather than just letting us know when the frigging beer was actually bottled. This one we'll guess and say it was bottled around April 30th and is now two months old.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Tree House tulip.

a: Clear orange with a finger thick white head which receded to thin surface foam and extensive patchy lacing.

s: Strong citrus

t: Powerful citrus and pine resin over a mild to moderate caramel malt base. Throat burn on the way down lets you know its 10% ABV, but lingering tongue bitterness is minimal.

m: Moderate with good body,.somewhat oily smooth.

o; It's good, and certainly Imperial.

One of my favorite flying dog beers so far. Very orange with minimal head. Aroma is unmistakably citra, mango and papaya with some faint garlic and a sharp hint of peppermint. Taste is much of the same, although this beer is big on malt too and that comes through on the tongue. Nice resinous mouthfeel with understatec carbonation

I really enjoy Citra hops. My first successful homebrew is heavy on the stuff (actually might need a balancing bitterness). I have also enjoyed other Flying Dog single-hop batches. I expected much from this...

A: very clear light amber-orange. Ok head with minimal lacing.
S: here is a missed opportunity, in my mind. I don't get much of the Citra, but it is there. Also a bit of alcohol smell. Overall, there isn't a lot here, either way.

T/M: I have had this before, and I believe this is the beer that made me be able to distinguish the hop variety (as I hadn't really paid attention before). As is typical, my previous rating was higher. However, the beer does have an orange taste to it up front. I take it as a little on the sweet side. This taste subsides a little quick, but as it does, there is a grassy taste with a slightly resin feel that creeps in. This combination holds through the end, combining with a bit of an alcohol burn to turn out quite well.

O: was hoping for my (perhaps flawed) memory of this beer. It is still a solid offering, straightforward as I believe intended. Can't complain, and I will have another, probably today.

Solid DIPA, one of the better East Coast IPAs. The best IPA I've had from Flying Dog.

A: Light, golden. Pours with decent head, which disappears quickly.

S: Citrus, hops.

T: Great taste. It has a similar taste of many of the great West Coast IPAs. The balance just isn't there to make it world class. The Citra hops give it a bolder flavor.

O: I love this DIPA. It doesn't have an oaky funk or overpowering bitterness. It has tons of hops but is balanced nicely by the citrus sweetness. Definitely worth a try and the best I've had from Flying Dog. Well done.
