From BeerAdvocate Magazine #81 (Oct 2013):

Sort of a delayed bitterness with each sip, this beer wants to talk flavor first before it throws down the bitterness. This ended up being a really tasty Imperial IPA with enough balance so that our palates weren’t decimated. Flying Dog should keep on playing around with hops; more than often they end up with treats like this.

STYLE: American Imperial IPA
ABV: 8.7%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Rich golden hue, sudsy

SMELL: Dank hop, oily, herbal, peppery, pineapple, mango, pumpkin seeds, pine, alcohol

TASTE: Creamy, leafy, oily, growing bitterness, stone fruit, orange peel, green peppercorn, juicy, malty, semi-pungent, bread crust, alcohol warmth, papaya; lingering hoppy, bitter finish

33cl bottle. Pours a very clear copper, with a white head that gives way to a sticky lacing. Smells of citrus hops and pine resin, plus a bit of salt. The taste is decently balanced, leaning towards bitter a bit, with notes of caramel, citrus hops and a bit of pine; dank. Smooth mouthfeel , bitter aftertaste, medium to low carbonation.

Short review

This could have a lot going for it (and I'm a local fan of Flying Dog) but this Imperial IPA is just trying a bit too hard and comes across a bit harsh, especially on the finish where it is a bit stinging and astringent.

12 oz bottle poured into snifter

A: nice amber color with excellent clarity nice tight small bubbly head that stick around

S: fruity in the way of citrus but very slight peppery and floral good bit of biscuity malts

T: Very resinous touch of citrus with peppery and earthy hops

M: A little syrupy which gives it more of a medium to heavier feel good bright carbonation

O: A solid beer but nothing special I am chasing a citrus taste that I can't quite catch. Otherwise its very earthy and peppery and malty its a pretty ok beer I think if I saw it again I would pass on it.
