Pours out an orange-brown color with a quite a bit of sediment floating around. Nice fluffy white head with plenty of staying power. Smell sweet and reminiscent of some of the abbey ales, with a spicy touch for good measure.
Taste is alcohol up front; it's the dominant tone in this beer's repertoire. Starts out sweet, ends up tart in the end. Confusing is what I'd call the taste, although pleasant nonetheless. It doesn't develop emphatically one way or the other. There's spice and little candy sugar in there as well as some of that warm bread dough feel.
The mouthfeel is nice and warm; strangely enough, it doesn't leave me with much of an aftertaste, except for a strange almost tea-like sensation in the back of my throat.
I liked this but I didn't love it. There's just too many better offerings in this style to make this something I'd drink on a regular basis.

Pours more a deep burnt orange than amber with a huge fluffy head that leaves sheets of lace behind in my chalice,aroma of chocolate dipped raisins and a little clovey spiciness.wow this goes down very nicely for 9% alc thats for sure slides down very easily,flavors are quite dry wich was unexpected but welcome lightly sweet cookie dough and cloves with an odd lactic sourness in the finish but it was refrshing i think.A damn fine ale with some subtle complexities like the finish.

Appearance Oh, does this brewery know how to make an ale look good or what? This one is a beautiful, deep dark orange in color with an unbelievable head that went down slowly.
Smell This one is pale and very Saisonish. The spices are just monstrous. After 1100+ reviews on the site this is one of the spiciest beers that Ive smelled. I have zero chance of picking them apart, but they are very powdery and dark.
The hops are huge as well. They are very peppered and leafy, like wild fresh tea leaves with cardamon (sp?). The malt base is in the background and nicely full of yeasty aromas.
Taste Oh, my Lord, is this something else. Its really overpowering. The flavors are as big as Ive ever had in a Belgium.
The spices will just floor you. They are almost over-the-top, except that I just adore heavily-spiced ales. It is definitely cardamon (sp?) like you get with some fancy Indian teas. I also get a big swig of this when I buy Lebanese coffee at a local Mediterranean grocery store.
The Belgian hops are wicked as well. They almost drown out the light yeasty malts, but theres just enough there to take note. This is a wild ride.
Mouthfeel This ale is medium to full-bodied and extremely fluffy in the mouth. I just love this mouthfeel. It puffs up your cheeks even on a small sip. The sharp spicing and hoppiness will have you making faces.
Drinkability You could age this for ten years and still have a good beer, but I wouldnt have the patience. I have never tasted anything even remotely like this. This is big beer at its best.

33cl bottle pours into a goblet a hazy, burnt orange color with a billowing tan head. Excellent retention and abundant lacing. Many minute bubbles flow to the top from the bottom of the glass. Aroma is very nice. Fruity floral in a bigtime way, with banana, vanilla, apricot, plum, a hint of yeasty mustiness, and even some spices. Mouthfeel is very carbonated, rich, and medium bodied. Taste is of candied fruits, with a good deal of yeasty breadiness. Plums and raisins are tasted as well. Some mild hopping keeps the sweetness in check, and the finish is a bit on the dry side of neutral. Alcohol is well concealed by the fine balance. A very well done ale that may be underrated.

Appearance: dull amber, brown, thick with unfiltered yeast; fine, sand coloured head with great retention; fine looking Belgium beer
Aroma: faintly herbal, and floral, with a touch of cinnamon; very light, but there's depth to it, drawing you in; some caramel, vanilla
Taste & Mouthfeel: toffee pudding and some vibrant, almost juicy fruit - cherry, peach, grape - which turns quickly to a dry, crisp finish; lightly acidic with sharp carbonation contribute to the brisk finish, a good play to cut through the initial sweet malt and yeast esters; as the rest of the bottle is poured and remaining settled yeast fills the glass, it obviously becomes much more full bodied (a little buttery) and the fruit flavours more pronounced, with a creamy texture - the whole thing really smooths out
Overall: flavour and particularly aroma is all over the place, surely coming from a great yeast strain - it's exciting and intriguing with great feel and flavour

Lots of caramel and chocolate flavours, hints of coriander spice in the finish, with a bit of green vegetable (perhaps capsicum and a bit of celery) towards the finish, malty, reminds me of there other beers a hell of a lot. I dug this a lot.

It was time to get on this bottle, as it reads "Best Before 2007". I imagine it's got some years on it, but not sure exactly how old it really is...
Pours an orange/amber with some haze and floaters, and a big and fluffy creamy head. Looks fantastic.
Nose is citrus, herbal/flower, some spicy/funky yeast, and doughy, like big yeast-powered bread dough on the rise.
Plenty of hops in this beer, mingling with a caramel sweetness. This forms the foundation, but there's more: cinnamon rolls, toasty malts, peppercorns, candi sugar. Very dessert-y. Also kind of musty and earthy. Lots happening here. And as with most Abbaye Des Rocs stuff, supremely/deviously well-hidden alcohol!
Creamy, buoyant, butter-slick mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.
I suspect aging has done some very good things to this beer. An excellent offering all around. I love you Belgium!!!

Blurry pumpkin bronze with a stained yellow, fattened, lasting cap.
Scented of blood orange, spiced rum, pineapple, lilac, green grapes, watermelon, algae, allspice, ginger, and grilled peaches. Yeah, uh, it smells fucking awesome.
It begins through the mouth with a slathering caramel sweetness. This progresses towards dates, green raisins, honeydew melons, and plantains. A cutting Pinot Gris acidity develops, tempered with a sweet Reisling edge. Yeast adds continuous dough and pepper. Spice brings orange rind. Hops hammer in traces of mint and dried grass.
Medium bodied, fully formed with an everlasting, nonobtrusive carbonation.
This is drinkable is cheek-puffing gulps, and fully lives up to the des Rocs standard. This is possibly their most under rated.

A very good Belgian, even as a transition from the Leffe, as I used it for. Initially creamy and malty with good yeast, with a lot of ornage and corriander and yeast sediment. Was better at room temperature then it was initailly from the fridge. Lace and cloudy orange.

Served from a 750ml bottle with best-before 2008 date.
Poured a slightly hazed translucent caramel. Big foamy light tan head that leaves a firm film and very sticky lace coating. Smells of spicy yeast blended with alcohol-dipped citrus fruits. Slightly creamy, very light, and strongly carbonated body. Yeasty and lemony fruit flavors that are not ultimately up to the complexity suggested by the aroma. Finishes medium-dry, increasingly tart and with warming alcohol.
Rather refreshing for the strength, though not very complicated compared to the stronger Abbaye des Rocs beers.

You can't go wrong with Abbaye Des Rocs, I guess. I loved their regular brune and this one is my
second go at this under-marketed brewery. Again I got this beer from Brussel Sprouts which is
already becoming the utopia of Belgian beers in Singapore. The Montagnarde's quite a mouthful
of a word and apparently it is pronounced "mon-ta-niad" or something close by. Anyway this beer
is a rather interesting brew; it pours out brownish golden with lot's of sediment like the
Pauwel Kwak with a fairly large head medium retention. In fact, in terms of appearance I think
it ressembles the Pauwel Kwak except that the Kwak had larger sediment flakes than this one.
The smell was majorly hoppy aromas and some fruit (plums) on the nose. A minor swirling would
cause the hoppy smell to be even more pronounced covering most of the fruity smell. It is
documented on BA as a Belgian Dark ale but I think that a Strong Pale Ale may suit it better as
it is just not dark enough. However, a surprised came when I sipped it. The Montagnarde hit me
straight with lot's of hop and floral aroma on entry with a light yeast backing and the finishing
was fruity with signifcant hints of plums on the nose. Light, subtle bitterness was also detected
on the finish. The after taste that comes immediately fully exemplifies the pluminess of this ale
stil leaving some plums on the nose. This plum taste gradually fades off to reveal grapes. Why I
feel that this one's interesting in terms of taste is because it gives the mixed feel of a blond,
a dark Belgian ale and perhaps a hopped ale too. The huge hoppiness was evident of a hopped ale
but it was different; it is florally aromatic hops. The yeastiness was typical of the blond ales
and the strong plum fruitiness was typical of the dark ales. Mouth feel was medium body, closer
to the thin side and carbonation was at a good level; smoothness all over with a very light
alcohol burn leading to very good drinkability. Quite a special ale and I can appreciate it,
definitely, but I still prefer a formal dark ale with strong rich flavourful tastes.

Purchased at the LCBO 330ml bottle for around $3.25. Served at 10deg C in a challis.
A- Opened with a mighty pop. Poured with an excellent 1" head tapering to a film within a minute or two
S- Hints of roasted caramel
T- Pretty good. Nice carbonation lends itself to easy drinkability. Not a hint of the 7.5%. Well blended brew
M- Very good. Creamy yet light. Again excellent brew
O- Very good. Not a favorite triple for me but very good. I will definitely try again on tap.
This nice little trip went well with... Roasted turkey! The combination of the poultry seasoning and crispy skin just accentuates this brew.

33 cl bottle, served in Chimay goblet.
Beautiful dark gold; impressive, stable head. Highly complex taste w/ a rich, delicate spiciness. Powerful. Fabulous mouthfeel, nicely prickly on the tongue and at the same time velvety smooth. Easy to drink.
A superbly balanced beer; one of the best golden ales I've had.

Bottle: Poured a extremely cloudy dirty brown color ale with a super huge off-white foamy head with good retention (lots of chunks were discernable in the glass). Aroma of floral malt with some funky yeast. Taste is dominated by sweet caramel malt but the yeast presence was just shadowing most of the taste profile. This wasnt a particularly bad thing as I did appreciate the funky feel from the yeast. Alcohol is well hidden and body if fuller then average.

The beer as it resides in the glass after departing the 33cl brown bottle is a beclouded deep orange to almost brown, the head is moderate in size, semi-creamy in texture and the color an off white, the lace forms a velum like sheet to conceal the glass. The nose has a slight yeast aroma, over ripe plums comes to mind, with malt sweetness at the back with the start sweet and a nice malted grain presence, the top id middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is delectable in its acidity, the hops pleasing and spicy in their bite with the aftertaste quite dry, nice touch of warming in the tummy from the 9 percent ABV.

33cl Bottle: New Years Day, in a bar on the Grand Place in Mons, Belgium.
The body had an orange hue, a slight hazy mistiness prevented me seeing through the glass; small head which became a collar and a wisp after my second sip.
Although I found some citrus esters in the nose and yeast aromas the overriding smells were sweeter: summer fruits and a caramel like maltiness.
I thought the taste on the sweet side, caramel and toasted fruit cake: the yeast tries to come through as well, but no real hop input flavour wise.
The alcohol content is well disguised, the sweetness being the only hint that this might be on the strong side. Overall too sweet, it does however slip down very nicely: one is enough for me in a session though.

Lather, amber caramel style. Nose of brown sugar with a small cellar scent that brings out the smell of macerated fruit. The palate offers this fruity flavor with a little bitterness (more or less spicy) accompanied by sugar candy purely typical of Belgian dark beers. A small power alcoholic tickles the back of the palace but we must admit that alcohol is controlled and that even if the beer is not perfect, the balance is ensured in all cases.

A nice thick head prabably due to my poor pouring abilities. A nice deep amber colour much the same as the Abbaye des Rocs.
Much the same flavour as Abbaye des Rocs but with an almost water down version. Almost a root beer quality - ginger???

Orangish amber color in a chalice glass. Light beige foam crowns & remains dense. When disipating nice lacings decorate on sides. Fresh fruits, spices & candy aromas will enjoy your nose. Palate is flavored with the same hints, leaving an smooth aftertaste. Alcohol is present but masked in a sugary sensation. Excellent companion in a paused drink-time.
