At one time, La Crosse produced more beer than Milwuakee. It is where the massive G. Hielimann Brewery stands...and the home of the worlds largest six pack, and the tapping of the golden keg. How I long for the day when this city will resume it's place among the world's beer meccas. But alas, in the early '90's a greedy Australian douche bag bought the brewery up, and went bankrupt, leaving the city's brewing future in turmoil.

Is it possible that a tiny brewery like Pearl St. may one day help La Crosse ascent the throne once more?

This beer pours a rich brown with a inch thick head that dissipates into a nice lace that stays with you until the bottom of the glass. The aroma is boozy and nutty with touches of oatmeal and caramel. The flavor is nutty and it makes me wonder if a nut flavor is not added. Like Lienekugels fireside nut brown (Which is a freaking lager). This beer is very fliberty with a toasty finish. The mouthfeel is light. A curious beer to be sure.

12oz bottle poured into a nonic pint.

A - Dark amber with great clarity. Off-white cap of foam holds a cap. Spotty lacing.

S - Biscuit malt that jumps right into some coffee with little in between. Plenty of DMS.

T - Taste follows the nose. If I closed my eyes, I wouldn't know there were any kilned malts in this from all the base flavors. Prickly carbonation on top of some mild sweetness. Finishes with some bitterness.

M - Light to medium-light body, medium to medium-high carbonation, semi-dry.

O - It's good to support local breweries so in a pinch I would order this but not over most American craft beers. This beer has some aroma flaws and really lacks all character in the taste.

Recommendation - Pass this up.

Served slightly chilled in a standard pint glass at a local bar.

A=Very dark brown, with a slight hint of red...almost opaque. A thin, ecru foam head was less than standard.

S=Nice smell of malt--cocoa and cream.

T=Rather strong taste of semi-sweet chocolate at first, with a bit of coffee and biscuit...seemed to turn sweeter and lighter as I drank. Somewhat of a mix between semi-sweet chocolate and milk chocolate, but not bitter.

M=Lighter body than I anticipated, with a lower amount of carbonation. I would have preferred it to have a bit more body, but the lightness makes it a good session beer.

O=I enjoyed this beer and would buy it again...I had paired it with a hamburger, but drank most of it before the burger arrived...still, it was light enough to compliment the burger rather well.
