Poored for stubby bottle black and thick looking. Smells like a standard stout. Taste kinda dark chockolaty kinda almost an odd fruity. Feel is a little thiner than I was hoping for. Could see drinking this again but nothing worth going out of my way for.

Appearance: Pours a nearly jet black color with a moderate medium/dark tan head. SRM of 24. (3.75)

Aroma: Large, smooth aromas of smooth milk chocolate and cocoa, dark patent malts, and hints of smooth espresso. Incredibly smooth aromas with only hints of roast. (4.25)

Flavor: The flavor follows with more sourness and astringency. The large smooth chocolate is balanced by a strong lactose and oat malt astringency to clean off the mild roast/chocolate and allow it to finish slightly sour. Almost has a sour dark berry fruit-like flavor. Not over powering though. Drinks fairly clean. (3.75)

Feel: Medium-bodied. Low carbonation. Very smooth on the palate. (3.75)

Compared to Stockyard's Oatmeal Stout (Trader Joe's) 1/26/21: Pours a similar color with a darker tan head. Stronger aromas. More dark patent malt, licorice, lactose, and oat malt sourness on the flavor.

Overall: A very flavorful oat stout. Strong aromas/flavors here and has quite a lactose and oat malt astringency to make it finish sour, but mostly clean off the chocolate and roast. A slight dark berry fruit flavor too, which gives off somewhat of a licorice twist. A pretty decent oat stout. Maybe the lactose here is slightly too much, but otherwise it's on point. Hard to criticize. (Final Rating: 3.87)

I'm trying this beer at the brewery. It poured an opaque dark with tan head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had chocolate character. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with slight chocolate presence and a hint of coffee grinds. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with subtle carbonation. Overall its a decent beer.

Brewery pour.

Nice aromas of chocolate, coffee, and oats. Faint nuttiness.

The flavor however is a lot like blood and oatmeal with a following note of coffee. Bitterness of a grapefruit rind. Hints of watered down dark chocolate. More blood. A bit off putting.

Silky feel with slight graininess and soft to medium carbonation. Slight roasty dryness on the finish.

Overall even though it's about 70% of the base for Java Lava, this one falls short entirely. Would not buy again.

Curious, but I am only the fifth review in five years.
That aside.... There has to be a reason why this stout is so under-rated... but I will let you say why... or why not.

However, I will agree it Looks slightly below average and Smells a bit milder than the typical American nose expects (If such a thing exists.) But aromas honestly tell what is coming: roasted malts, and some chocolate. Tastes are a cut above; well-roasted and well-blended malts use modest hops to create a well-balanced, semi-dry finish. Bittersweet (like the chocolate I just ate.) And these oats (organic, we're told) create a soft mouth. This stout is more than Okay.

There also are things to like about Pearl Street Brewery. I went on PSB's website and was impressed by their marketing and how much fun they have in this historic brewing town.Different than most crafters, they have stuck to doing what they brew well. Proof? They have only a total of 39 beers on BA, unusually few for two decades of crafting. I doubt I'm going to get to western Wisconsin. But if I lived there, PSB would be a suitable stop.

Black brew sitting under an impressive head of tan foam.

Roasted malt dominates the smell with both sweet and bitter notes. Chocolate is there and provides most of the bitterness.

Chocolate is on the sweet side in the taste. Roasted malt gives the bitter, I taste the oats in the background.

Smooth mouthfeel.

A nice brew, imho. Thanks Tyler!

12oz bottle. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours a dark black body, one finger offwhite head, fair retention, minimal lacing. Smells of roasted oats, a bit of smoke and char, small amount of milk chocolate, a bit of dark fruit. Flavour is chalky, a bit of char, mild roast, not a lot of other flavor. As mentioned, there is a lot of chalkiness, which really gets into the way of enjoying this. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, fair carbonation, as before, heavy chalkiness, an ashy finish. Overall, this was a very average to below average stout with way too much chalkiness and not much flavor to it.

12oz bottle, dated 9/22/15. Pours reddish black with a medium sized brown head. Smells of roasted malt, oats, and earthy hops; below average intensity. The taste follows exactly but is even weaker; malt, hops, oats, and some subtle chocolate. Pretty one-dimensional. Fairly thin mouthfeel and average carbonation. Overall, it's okay, but could really use more intensity and body.
