Abv on the bottle was 7.5% left over from a Christmas party bottle share. Pours medium brown with a 1.5 finger head. Smells like a typical brown ale. Malty, sweet, some roasty notes followed by a nice hop bitterness. Mouth feel is medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall this is a decent beer. It is not my typical style but I am happy to try it.

If I am NOT a fan of bottles, then I harbor an even greater dislike of bomber bottles! 22-fl. oz. is doable, but why? It seems to presuppose that I feel like drinking with other people when I am trying to write a review. This is usually NOT the case & becomes a quick path to The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody. In this case, I could not resist a bargain when I saw this as a seasonal close-out & given its "Imperial" designation, it should be okay with a little age.
From the Bottle: "'Merry Christmas'"; "est. 1989".
I Pop!ped the cap on this massive bottle & began a C-Line pour into my yuge glass. This resulted in just better than a finger of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with decent retention. Color was Brown to Dark Brown (SRM = > 22, < 27) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a pronounced milk chocolate-like sweetness. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was mainly of milk chocolate with caramel and coconut, but the sweetness was tempered by a cool mintiness, like wintergreen. Hmm. It was certainly within the specs of the style as outlined in the updated Style Guide. Since there was so much of it, I found myself mulling over ways that I might really enjoy something like this & I hit upon mulling it! It is a Christmas/holiday beer anyway & I think that heating it in a double boiler & possibly adding some spices might be just the thing. I found myself enjoying it more as it warmed anyway & this would be a means of speeding the plow. Finish was semi-sweet, which was fine by me. I can really do without cloying sweetness. YMMV.

Appearance: Opaque deep amber in color, with a large, chunky and coarse tan head, which retains quite well. Belgian-style lacing adorns the glass walls.
Aroma: Intense pine hops vie with pronounced dark caramel. Bitter cocoa and coffee are present as well, with dark fruits as a backdrop.
Taste: Opens with earth and bitter cocoa. Pine tar hops present a backdrop that balances well against earthy and pine hops. Finishes with a lingering burnt caramel and earthy hop note.
Mouth feel: Full, soft, and very pleasant.
Drinkability/notes: A novelty beer that, nonetheless, it presents well. Worth a try. Would pair well with beef, pork, or venison.
Presentation: Packaged in a standard twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.
