Fish Brewing : Mud Shark Porter

LOOK: Pours a dark brown with about an inch of tan foam. Leaves lace down the glass. Appears to be a hearty porter.

SMELL: Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee.

TASTE: Roasted malts with some coffee and char giving way to a citrusy hop character. Moderately bitter, with a lot of dark malt character.

FEEL: Smooth and creamy feel with a medium carbonation.

OVERALL: A solid sessionable brew from the Fish lineup. Kind of reminded me of a black n tan as there seemed to be different grainy flavors. I thought this was enjoyable for what it is.

A - Dark brown with a nice tan head that last awhile while leaving nice lacing on the glass.

S - Nutty, roasted and a bit of coffee.

T - All of the usual porter flavors. All are pretty mild and balanced.

D - Good carbonation and a heavier body.

O - Nice Roasty malty coffee porter. Better than I was expecting.

Enjoyed from a growler during Super Bowl XLVI. Poured near-black with a finger of dark tan head. Mild, roasty aroma of coffee and hints of chocolate.

Moderate carbonation and a full, creamy mouthfeel. Roasty malt up front with hints of caramel sweetness and a nice mix of coffee and bitter chocolate. Very dry on the finish.

Light, easy-drinking porter. Not too sweet, but not excessively bitter or coffee-dominated either.

On-tap at the brewpub in lovely Olympia.

This beer appears a clear dark cola hue, with a thin cap of off-white head, which leaves some webbed lace in its wake. It smells of caramel malt, milk chocolate, and earthy hops. The taste is nutty chocolate malt, a bit of lactic sourness, and leafy, earthy hops. The carbonation is moderate to low, the body medium weight, and somewhat weirdly clammy. It finishes fairly dry, a root-like chocolate essence still pervading.

A nice, traditional porter, the sourness quotient agreeable in its subtlety, and even tempered overall.

Served in straight pint glass. Poured a barely translucent black, much darker than most Porters and about the same as some Stouts, with about an inch of dark tan head that had OK retention and light lacing.

The aroma had a solid roasted scent with just a hint of coffee in the background. The flavors also were solidly roasted malt, as expected, and roasted notes had a nice lingering finish.

The body was a bit thinner than typical for the style. Drinkability was very good, having a couple isn't a chore. Overall, a nice, pleasant, solid beer. An easy go-to choice when I'm in the mood for this style.

from notes, came across this on tap randomly at Bottlescrew Bill's in Calgary
A - very dark brown, thin mocha head left pretty nice lacing
S - rich roasty malt and coffee notes, semi sweet dark chocolate, light sweetness
T - much like the nose, the roasty and espresso malts dominate, dark chocolate and silky vanilla, some toffee sweetness comes through on finish
M - rich yet appropriate level of thinness, fairly chalky finish
O - a nice surprise to come across, has all the characteristics of a solid porter, easy drinking, I hope to come across this again

This is one of the better porters that I've ever encountered.

Deep brown body and with a thick tan head, the aroma is of roasted malt, rather than that of any hops.
Chocolately, with lots of grain flavor, and a rich, luxurious mouthfeel. This is outstanding.

Enjoyed this at my favorite pub on a chilly night and it it brought some welcome warmth to the occasion.

Seek it out!

The first Porter I ever had and I am glad it was Fish brewed!
Poured a black color with a medium tan foamy head. Nose of mostly chocolate and earthiness. A good medium bodied porter with decent hops and good backbone. Pretty chewy and def organic. Nice mellow roasted malt flavor, very smooth. Finish is subtle cocoa and roasted malt.

Served in a nonic at the brewpub, Mud Shark is pitch black with garnet edges and a light tan head that leaves tons of thick, foamy lace.

Smell is rather soft, lightly roasted chocolate.

Taste is also lightly roasted chocolate, semi-sweet, dry and soft, but well balanced and tasty.

Mouthfeel is light and crisp, with a nice level of carbonation.

Drinkability was high for me, as I really enjoyed this porter and could have drank them all night. Like all the other Fishbowl brew's I've had, well made although a bit forgettable, with varying degrees of tastiness, Mud Shark being on the higher side.

This 12 oz. unlabelled bottle was brought to me courtesy of jcwattsrugger, from his trip to the NW. As I understand it, it is not normally bottled - Thanks, John!

Pours very dark brown with a thin, tan head that becomes a lasting patch.

The smell is of dark caramel/toffee with some coffee/chocolate notes and a touch of peppery spiciness.

The taste is of toffee/caramel - chocolate and cream - An earthy, slightly nutty, background has a touch of pepper. The roasted character in the dry finish balances out the malty, chocolatey sweetness well.

Creamy, rich and smooth, this is a well-crafted American porter. A good example of the style. Very drinkable and enjoyable!

Had a few samples and settled on a pint at the fishbowl brewpub.
A - Deep brown with dark shades floating in and out after the pour. Highlights of garnet topped with a small tan head.

S Cocoa and malted milk odors with noticeably roasty odors and a gentle berry scent.

M - Full, roasty, dry and on the light side of medium bodied. Great carbonation with a clean finish

T - Dry, roasty with creamy cocoa and lightly citrus hop flavor with a nutty but mellow crystal malt essence. Starts with an excellent chocolate malt and hints at piney spruce hops when the malt recedes sweet and hoppy are balanced pleasingly with a spicy java essence.

D - Highly drinkable and balanced with accent on malt up-front. Nice blend of hops to compliment the malts and gentle
effervescent mouthfeel. A bit dry but certainly worth trying - a nice Northwestern american porter.

On tap at an area watering hole, Prospectors Bar & Grill in Airway Heights. Served in a pint (room temperature) glass.

Pours a black walnut color and is opaque. a bubbly beige head forms, but is not real resilient. It fades away quickly.

The smell is faint. Roasted (charcoal) grain and coffee notes.

The taste is a roasted malt flavor, smoke, charcoal, coffee and dark chocolate.

Mouth feel is smooth full bodied.

This is a nice easy drinking porter, but somewhat filling. A real bargain though at $2.50 a pint.
