Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine May 2007.

Certified organic and brewed with Santiam and Haller- taur hops. Dubbed "The First Ale of the Republic" and brewed in keeping with the Cascadian commitment to protect natural water resources. (Check out zapatopi. net/cascadia for some paranoia-fueled fun.)

Thick, bubbly head rises to three fingers in height and leaves a substantial amount of lace on the glass. Bright amber hue glows when put up to light. Strapping caramel aroma from the malt, with fresh-cut grass and a hint of lemon in the back. More smoothness than crispness, with a medium level of carbonation and a stable body and mouthfeel. Spicy hop bitterness strikes first with peppery, herbal and mild lemon flavors. Modest caramel malt flavor intertwines with the hops to show balance. Flavors remain far into the semi-sweet finish.

Nothing earth-shattering, just a downright drinkable Amber Ale; and the hop character adds a kick to it like no other Amber out there. It really grew on us after a while. A plate of thin-sliced bresaola and buffalo mozzarella would be an ideal pairing.

12 oz brown bottle with a freshness date on the side of the label. This bottle was from Liquid Solutions.

Appearance: Dense and rocky off white head holds three fingers deep for a little while, clear and bright reddish auburn colour.

Smell: Bready and husky grain aroma with subtle fruity undertones and light hopping in the nose.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Moderate body with a smooth and crisp mouth feel, a heavy hand of toasted malt on the palate. Nice bite from the hop bitterness shows and slightly juicy underbelly of citric hop. Some fruity flavours and nutty yeast make their way to the taste buds. Finishes a little sweet.

Notes: A rock solid amber ale, nothing special just an easy drinking ale. Quite enjoyable.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a light brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, some hops and some fruit.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty but not too heavy malt character. Then some sweetness comes in from flavors of caramel, citrus and some other fruits. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a decent balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, it’s a solid beer worth drinking for a while.

A: Bronze with a slight redish tint. Light tan head with a medium carbonation.

S: Spice and wheat bread. Toasted seeds like cashew and walnut and malted barley. A dash of metal and aluminum.

T: Sweet brown sugar notes and tangy finish. New wood, maybe cedar. Rich and nutty with a cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Mellow and smooth and light for an amber with still a well rounded palette of toast and grain.

M: Thin in a cool and refreshing way. A bit of a steel aftertaste mixed in qua woodiness that lingers long and dry.

O: Long time since I've had a good amber.. Or any amber in fact. Very light and drinkable for an amber. Full flavor without the overly hoppy flavor. Not bad for a beer I bought on clearance.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

The beer is a dark caramel copper color. A cream colored head recedes to a chunky film, with good webby lacing. The beer smells deliciously of malts, bready yeast, and sweet caramel. The taste is also bready with a glaze of sweet caramel over it. Light grain notes fill out the back end. The mouthfeel is medium bodied.

Overall, a really great tasting amber ale with all of the great amber characteristics.

Appearance - Pours a semi-hazy, rusty orange with an off-white, finger width head. Average retention. Lacing is spotty at best, with little stick.

Smell - Moderate caramel aroma. Hops are well hidden, but faint notes of floral and citrus peaks through as the beer warms.

Taste - Caramel dominates the flavor profile from start to finish. Hops play a small supporting role, staying mostly subdued, but do well to keep this from becoming too sweet. There is a subtle orange note sitting behind the caramel near the finish, and that's basically it.

Mouthfeel - Light to medium body. Moderate carbonation. Smooth going down.

Overall - This beer's a one trick pony, but that trick is pretty good. Caramel bomb. I wouldn't miss this if I never had it again, but I wouldn't regret buying it either. Nice session beer candidate. Reminds me quite a bit of Mad River Steelhead Extra Pale Ale, only not nearly as good.
