Thanks to BrewsB4Shrews for this beer. I've been saving it for a good time, and Xmas vacation sounds like a good time. '06 vintage, so 5 years on this baby, should be interesting!

Still makes a thwop sound as I crack it, good sign. Pours a nice large 1.5 finger darker colored head that lingers for quite some time and slowly fades with nice lacing, over jet black beer, really no light shining through.

Nose is interesting, it starts with brown sugar, dates, and cocoa. Some dark baker's chocolate, and plenty of dark malts but no roast or black patent that I can detect from the nose at least. Then syrups and fruits, tons of molasses, dates and figs, dark fruits, brown sugar, and some caramel. Hint of vanilla rounds it off. Being 5 years old I don't get much bitterness, roast, hops, or booze.

Taste starts a bit off, light metallic and oxidized flavors, probably due to the age. Then malts galore, dark creamy luscious malts, black patent a bit, plenty of baker's chocolate, and heavy crystal malts. Then syrups again, molasses, caramel, brown sugar, etc. with it comes the fruits again, fig and date soaked in syrup. Booze is fairly rampant too, with a warming and plenty tingly booze. Hints of cocoa, cinnamon, and slightest hint of licorice. Creamy and almost chewy, with a lush malty feel and flavor. It finishes slightly bitter although I think more from the malts than the hops, but maybe hints of earthy hops, and a creamy sticky finish, more cocoa, syrupy flavors, molasses and caramel, brown sugar, nutty malts, more cinnamon and cocoa, and a bit of booze late.

Mouth is heavier bodied, creamy and luscious, decent carb esp for the age, plenty of booze.

Overall pretty good, shows some signs of the age with a little oxidation and hints of metallic flavors. Nice dark malts, not big on roast or bitterness, booze is definitely there. Nice malts and syrupy flavors, and nice fruits, but def a slow sipper even with its age.

A - Dark brown beer with a finger of tan head that fades to a bit of a cap. Nothing left on the sides.

S - Roasted malts, chocolate, little bit of bittering coffee. Slight bit of caramel. Straight-forward, not overly complex, but nothing to complain about.

T - Roast, chocolate, slight coffee, toffee, caramel, little dark fruit. It's straight forward. Not particularly complex, but enjoyable.

M - Full bodied, moderate carbonation. Fitting.

O - Solid RIS, not spectacular but a good drinker and pretty easy to get down at 10%.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown and black color with a dark tan mocha head. Dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, and roast. Medium/heavy mouthfeel. Roasty and sweet with a molasses backing. Not overly roasty. Nice sweet dark chocolate. Lingering roasted flavors. Decent. Overall, this to me is an pretty average RIS, not overly complex in any way but drinkable.

Pours 1/4 finger of khaki tan head. Color is a deep black.

Aroma: A lot of roast. Coffee, chocolate, and caramel. Kind of sweet. A lot of grains. Silky,

Taste: Even more roast here with some coffee flavors. Raisins and molasses. Caramel and chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Roasted and dry. Full bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends with more roasted flavors.

Overall, a decent RIS, but fairly average. Nothing out of the ordinary. A bit too roasted for me.

A: Thin tan foam that quickly fell into the beer. Beer is black as night without a moon.

S: I smell figs.

T: Slightly burnt character. Fruit coming through - figs and raisins, contributing to underlying sweetness. Overall flavor not as robust as other Imperial Stouts.

M: Initial carbonation was high - so much so, I found it distracting from the flavor.

O: Drinkable brew but with a definite dry finish.

Thanks to Alex for bringing this bottle out to try along with the barrel-aged version. Served in my Cantillon tulip.

Pours a really dark brown with a single-finger tan head. Fades into a light cap. The nose brings forward a bit of roasted malt and some chocolate. Not terribly complex--especially compared with the BA version--but nothing off about it. The taste is along the same lines. It's fairly decent but not good enough to warrant a four. Some roast plus a bit of chocolate. Slightly dry with the roast. Medium body. Decent enough in the end, but nothing remarkable.

Had right after a 2001 BA Poseidon's at an after-Christmas tasting, both courtesy of Masterski (thanks Alex!). This was a 12oz bottle, consequently small pours for everyone.

It poured dark black and opaque with a lot of tan foam. Pretty similar to the aged BA version in appearance alone.

The smell is not too similar, this is fresher (a plus) but less complex (a minus), and in many ways seemed kindo of pedestrian. Cocoa and roasted malts, maybe just a hint of raisin or plum. These all sound good but together it didn't seem so special without the wine barrel aging.

I felt the cocoa came through the strongest up front, with a lasting roasty bitterness in the aftertaste. A medium body, again not bad but not spectacular.

12oz bottle provided by Alex to compare with the ba version. This one was greatly outclassed, and that little bottle barely got touched...Dark brown pour, with a small white head, not much to look at...The aroma is so-so with burnt malt, caramel and chocolate...The taste is more burnt notes, just not very good. Coffee, grains, and alcohol.

One of the worst stouts of the night we had, I wouldn't go out of the way for it.

Reviewed on 3/26/2010. Bottle. Pours black with a small ring of tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, charred malt, sweet molasses, vanilla, booze. Flavor is similar with very sweet, heavy roasted and sweet malts, molasses, sweet dark fruits. Heavy palate and somewhat boozy (I was surprised to see the 8% abv). Meh, a little boring for me and I wasn't a fan of the flavor profile.

A: poured a dark as night black with a thin brown head and left a little lacing sticking to the glass.

S: it had a nice chocolate cocoa aroma alongside, dark fruits, grains, malts, slight booze, vanilla, and a touch of bourbon from the barrel. There was also some faint maple notes in the background as well.

T/M: the choclate flavors are a bit more potent on the palate with some roastiness but it also had vanilla bourbon accents and slight coffee notes. The brew was full in body with a moderate amount of carbonation which had a sweet, roasty, slight boozy, and silky finish.

D: it drank really good and was very tasty but what I really liked about the beer is that the booze didn't over power the overall flavor making it hard to enjoy.

I think Derek said that this one was 4 years old? Either way, cheers for sharing!

Midnight pour with a finger of tan head that left some lace spots as it dropped to a film. Coffee, tobacco, chocolate and dark fruit on the nose has it kicking it old school. Flavour follows faithfully, with the roast all in balance, and a bit of smokiness alleviating it slightly. Moderate acidic bitterness, and restrained hopping. Body is lighter than many examples of the style, and I feel closer to the original intent of the style. Makes it more drinkable, which is dangerous for a well-concealed 10%!

Pretty much a classic RIS, and in my mind it seems closer to the original template of they style than a lot of the bigger more sought after examples you'll find on BA. Its certainly well done, and I hope my scores justify that, but on a personal level, the more of these big imperials I have, the more I appreciate the smaller stuff.
