This onne pours a medium brown with some amber and a pretty small head for a German style wheat ale. Head was pretty tight, maybe around one to one 1/2 fingers and it was pretty light tan.

Nose on this one has coke syrup, bready and wheaty malts, and even a slight bit of wild Musk perfume. There is also some dried banana chips in the backround that remind me of a fresh made trail mix.

Taste is clean and crisp and consists of chocolaty malts, spices, mainly cloves and there is a little bit of the boozy alcohol in the finish. There is also a bit of the coke syrupy taste that I had in the smell.

This is a pretty good Dunkelweizen. I hav'nt had much of this style in a while and this is a good way to get back into them.

Poured into a weizen glass a deeper chesnut brown with thicker but quick to fade off white head atop.Aromas were very light with some minimal clove being the main component,a passing toasty wheat note comes thru as well.Alot like the aromas the flavors are minimal,light clove and again the toasted wheat.Very average beer for the style,not horrible but lacking any real punch of flavor.

12oz bottle, a single from a cool new store in Cowtown that breaks down those overpriced import six packs.

This beer pours a rather murky dark cherry-wood colour, with two fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves some low-lying spanning bridge trestle lace around the glass as it rapidly makes its exit.

It smells of thin roasted wheat grain and caramel malt, a bit of brown sugar, weak coffee, faint banana chip esters, and mild earthy, musty hops. The taste is more toasted wheat and biscuity caramel malt, a rather understated and indistinct fruitiness, bittersweet cocoa, an ethereal coffee astringency, and earthy, somewhat leafy, piney hops.

The carbonation is moderate, and kind of tight in its bearing, the body on the light side of medium weight, and thinly smooth. It finishes fairly dry and a bit crisp, the malt acting kind of pithy and clingy.

Hmmm...a mild, in alcohol and flavour both, dunkelweizen, with the suggestion of a west coast hop dalliance. Interesting, I suppose, and it has enough basic elements to not write off entirely. I wouldn't refuse this if offered, as it's well made and plainly drinkable.

Pours a dark pale brown with a short bubbly tan head. Short retention and no lacing.

At first to me it smelled like a handful of fresh black patent malt at your local home brew shop. A little oaky with some chocolate and a touch of bacon.

Flavor is good and balanced well. Not that there is alot to balance in this style. Not very bright and shiny flavor notes, just nice dark wheat-roasted malty goodness.

Very smooth, fresh and light bodied mouthfeel with low carbonation.

Overall this is a good dunkelweizen. Not spectacular, but it has pretty good flavor, seems fresh and is very easy to drink.

nice pour, good head, great color. Tastes closer to a light porter than a wheat. Not much wheat taste or character here. Overall, very nice flavor with a crisp, clean finish. Some malty and possibly some choclately flavors. Overall, a well done beer sitting above average on the scale !!!!

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, a touch of yeast detected. Taste is also somewhat mild, some banana, a bit more hops than usual for this style, some mild spice. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is decent but mild for the style.

A dark amber/medium brown beer with a foamy off-white head.

Dark roasted malt and some wheat and yeast in the aroma.

A nice, sweet malt flavor up front. Slightly metallic. Some hop flavor. Mild bitterness.

A medium-light bodied mouthfeel. Soft carbonation.

Pretty good beer. Nothing crazy outrageous. Something I could drink all night.

Oooohhhh.. Galt spies a new brewery/label at Brewforia tonight.. Awesome.. 3 beers with the Leavenworth moniker.. cool.

That is as far as my "cool" goes.

Poured into my little stem glass.. the brew is perfectly clear deep brown.. the head is tan .. doesn't stick around for very long... no hazy yeast. no hazy wheat.

Nose is roasty and toasty... much like a Munich dunkel.. but nothing ever verging on Weizen territory... no clove no banana

Flavor is again .. toasted malts.. pretty clean.. dark malts and nothing else... no phenols.. no esters....

Where is the wheat.. where is the Weizen yeast.. Really.. this is a good beer... but nothing in the Dunkelweizen category... I would be embarrassed as a homebrewer.. let alone someone who is trying to make cash.

Damn... Damn... Damn. I like this brew alot as a minor Schwazbier.. or maybe as a Munich Dunkel.. but as a Dunkelweizen, this is a joke... I'm done.

Served in a bottle.

A: Pours a moderate bubbly, fizzy head that dissipates slowly and leaves almost no lacing. Color ranges from the top blackish-brown to light brown/red at the bottom. Excellent colors. Noticeable carbonation.

S: Roasted wheat and yeast. Smells decent. Not unpleasant by any stretch.

T: Tastes like a dark hefeweizen. Slightly bitter, maybe due to hops? (Based on the taste, dunkelbock also fits quite appropriately).

M: A little light. For a dark beer I would prefer a heavier mouthfeel. Smooth mouthfeel. A little bubbly (carbonation) is perceptible.

D: Goes down very easy. Could easily have another but there isn't enough to make me want to have more than one.

Not much to bring me back to it. I'd drink it again if offered but it isn't something I'd probably buy again. Overall I'd say this is decent but not exceptional or outstanding.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with little light transparency and half finger light tan head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of toasted malt, mildly nutty, slight sour note. Flavor of toasted and caramel malt, hints of chocolate and charred coffee, finishes with light toastiness and light grassy hops. Medium bodied. The malt profile seems closer to a mild porter than a weizen; I'm not getting much wheat character at all. Flavor has nice toasty malt and light chocolate elements, but seems to finish thin with a light sourness. An OK dark malty beer, but not really meeting the dunkelweizen style, and a bit odd for that. This is the second Leavenworth wheat style ale that seemed to be more of a traditionally malted style than a weizen. Odd. OK, but better choices if you're looking for a dunkelweizen.

pours a rich leathery caramel hue... a swirled pour produces a decently cloudy, wheaty amberish brown hue. an impressive two-finger almost billows out of my weizen glass, then slowly fades to a thin froth that stays til the bottom, leaving bits of lacing.

aroma of earth, dark malt, hints of pear and apricot. a touch of peat. almost rye-ish? interesting, although not quite what I was expecting.

taste follows aroma pretty closely, with lots of bread, malt, dough, hints of fruit and a bit more malt. a touch of sourness. kind of straightforwardly uninteresting.

mouth is amply carbonated, moderate body that works for the style. slightly bitter in the finish.

all in all, drinkable but not earthshattering. which is how i feel most of Leavenworth's stuff has turned out. I'd drink it again if it was on sale, but kind of unmemorable... and there are a lot of better dunkelweizens out there.

From a 355 ml brown bottle, came in a 6 pack. Pours out a cloudy dark brown, suspended particles, capped by a foamy loose-bubbled light tan head.

Coffee and chocolate in the aroma, very faint banana, and a hint of phenols.

Flavour is clean yet almost non-existant, simply a growing roasted malt character in the aftertaste. No off-flavours, just not much flavour in general.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, yet on the light side, almost watery.

Not a bad beer but definitely missing some key elements for a dunkelweizen, or a memorable beer for that matter. Not worth the hefty import pricetag here in Alberta.

Appearance: Very dark brown, unfiltered, good head retention.

Aroma: The caramel comes through as well as small hints of banana and cloves.

Taste: Tastes of roasted chocolate malts; small hints of clove; bittering hops at the end.

Mouthfeel: Good mouthfeel--similar to other dunkels.

Drinkable: Not as drinkable as other dunkels, but good.

Overall: This is a decent dunkelweizen, but I think it could be improved if the clove and banana flavors came through more in the beer.

I picked this up from Total Wine along with several other wheat beers. I'm a big fan of Hefes as well as Dunkelweizens (though to a lesser extent).

I will preface this by noting this may have been a bad bottle. You never know.

This was quite disappointing to say the least. I poured, slowly, carefully, only to watch everything turn to foam. So, after waiting a bit for it to settle I finished the pour. I took a sniff, I was assailed by something I can only describe as "vomit-like." I took a few sips and was displeased. A weizen, even Dunkelweizen, shouldn't be as hop-forward as this. Aftertaste was strange and unpleasant as well.

I did not finish this one. It's not out of the question that I had a bad bottle though. You never know how long something is sitting around. There was no bottling or best-by date on the bottle that I could find.

Pouring a cellar temp bottle into a stemmed tulip glass.
The beer pours a slightly cloudy mahogany hue with amber highlights on the edges of the glass. A creamy beige head of 1.5 cm foams up on the pour, but fades fairly quickly to a few strands of an edge layer. Basically no head at the first sips.
Aroma is some bready yeast and biscuity malt with a bit of toffee mixed in for good measure. I also get a bit of dry baker's chocolate. Fairly mild but not uninteresting nose.
First sip reveals a lighter body with fine tingly carbonation. Smooth and easy to drink. The flavors are similar to what the nose advertises with malt dominant profile of toffee and some chocolate. I do get a little bready yeast and some mild fruit flavors on the finish.
Overall the beer is not flawed but is not really memorable either. A little more yeast centric flavors could make it more interesting, I could describe the beer as a filtered dunkelweizen. Makes the overall experience, not bad but dull.

12oz. bottle served into a weissbier glass

Pours a very clear mahogany color. When held to light it is virtually indistinguishable from the brown glass of the bottle it came from. Disconcerting is its clarity; this must be a filtered wheat beer since there is no cloudiness to this beer whatsoever. Where's the yeast? The body pretty much looks just like a brown ale. One finger of sand head forms up but checks out of the party early, like the awkward religious girl who leaves before the drinking gets too serious.

I get lots of brown ale aromas right up front: toasted bread crusts and brown sugar and stale Maxwell House. There is some wheat aroma, but it smells old or overprocessed or something. Like dry whole-wheat bread. There's some kind of plasticy phenolic scent here that comes across as a used (but not necessarily filled) diaper. The phenols tell me that there's some weissbier yeast in this beer after all, but it isn't pulling its weight. Where's the clove? Where's the banana-like ester profile? The aroma of Boulder Bend Dunkeweizen is nailing the "dunkel" part of its given style, but failing to measure up to the "weizen" part. This nose is not to style, and moreover is just unpleasant.

Oh, God. This beer tastes awful. Take some stale whole-wheat breadcrusts and pour a spoonful of sasparilla and lemon on them and then throw them into a medicinal waste fire. Dunkelweiss my ass; there's no weissbier yeast flavors to be had, apart from a harsh phenolic character. This beer tastes like a plastic garbage bag. The inside of a used one, really. The beer gets watery in the midpalate, only to finish like a dentist's office with more plastic.

The beeer is medium-bodied and effervescent. It certainly doesn't seem like a poor effort in this respect. A decent mouthfeel does not alone a good beer make, however. My overall impression is that this beer is a complete waste of time and money, Avoid at all costs. In this bottle lies nothing but shame.
