12oz bottle purchased at Pilgrim's in Coeur d'Alene for $1.49. According to the notch on the label, this was bottled in August.

Poured a dark, cola-ish color with a creamy tan head of about an inch's worth in height. Said head took several minutes to drop. Streaks of lace were left behind.

Caramel sweetness in the nose. Toasted, earthy grain scent in the background.

Mildly sweet, with a very mild toasted biscuit flavor. Very slight dry note at the swallow. No weizen characteristics. I agree with others that have described this as more like a Munich dunkel lager.

Medium bodied, with a slightly prickly mouthfeel.

Doesn't seem much like a dunkelweizen at all. It's certainly easy to drink. If this were sold as a Dunkel lager, I'd give it better marks.

12oz bottle, a single from a cool new store in Cowtown that breaks down those overpriced import six packs.

This beer pours a rather murky dark cherry-wood colour, with two fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves some low-lying spanning bridge trestle lace around the glass as it rapidly makes its exit.

It smells of thin roasted wheat grain and caramel malt, a bit of brown sugar, weak coffee, faint banana chip esters, and mild earthy, musty hops. The taste is more toasted wheat and biscuity caramel malt, a rather understated and indistinct fruitiness, bittersweet cocoa, an ethereal coffee astringency, and earthy, somewhat leafy, piney hops.

The carbonation is moderate, and kind of tight in its bearing, the body on the light side of medium weight, and thinly smooth. It finishes fairly dry and a bit crisp, the malt acting kind of pithy and clingy.

Hmmm...a mild, in alcohol and flavour both, dunkelweizen, with the suggestion of a west coast hop dalliance. Interesting, I suppose, and it has enough basic elements to not write off entirely. I wouldn't refuse this if offered, as it's well made and plainly drinkable.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a dark brown with a light clear white head, spotty lace.

S: Dark malt/pumpernickel bread, heavy malt.

T: Carbonic acid hits me first which is never a good sign. Notes of dark malt, but light, no ester character.

M: Light-bodied, bit astringent, the carbonic acid comes out again.

D: Nowhere near what a good dunkelweisse should be, no yeast esters, and frankly not a real good tasting beer. For Leavenworth, just stick with the Alt.

Oooohhhh.. Galt spies a new brewery/label at Brewforia tonight.. Awesome.. 3 beers with the Leavenworth moniker.. cool.

That is as far as my "cool" goes.

Poured into my little stem glass.. the brew is perfectly clear deep brown.. the head is tan .. doesn't stick around for very long... no hazy yeast. no hazy wheat.

Nose is roasty and toasty... much like a Munich dunkel.. but nothing ever verging on Weizen territory... no clove no banana

Flavor is again .. toasted malts.. pretty clean.. dark malts and nothing else... no phenols.. no esters....

Where is the wheat.. where is the Weizen yeast.. Really.. this is a good beer... but nothing in the Dunkelweizen category... I would be embarrassed as a homebrewer.. let alone someone who is trying to make cash.

Damn... Damn... Damn. I like this brew alot as a minor Schwazbier.. or maybe as a Munich Dunkel.. but as a Dunkelweizen, this is a joke... I'm done.

Poured a dark brown, hazy, with a good tan head and lacing.

Aroma is roasted malts, hint of chocolate & smoke.

Taste follows nose as the roasted malts with a hint of smoke & chocolate only seem to come through after an inital wateriness. Reminds me more of a Swartzbier than a Dunkle.

Smooth mouthfeel, touch watery. Carbonation level works well.

Not a well crafted Dunkle, some nice flavours and @ 4.7% certainly sessionable. Hefty price tag in Alberta will probably make this my last Leavenworth Dunkle I try for awhile.

Appearance pours a dark amber with minimal head and lace. Smell of grainy sweet malty caramel. taste has a sweet smokey maltiness, with light hops and a note of chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel is light, fair bodied, but almost watered down with good carbonation. Not bad of a brew, but could use a bit more balance.

From a 355 ml brown bottle, came in a 6 pack. Pours out a cloudy dark brown, suspended particles, capped by a foamy loose-bubbled light tan head.

Coffee and chocolate in the aroma, very faint banana, and a hint of phenols.

Flavour is clean yet almost non-existant, simply a growing roasted malt character in the aftertaste. No off-flavours, just not much flavour in general.

Mouthfeel is creamy and smooth, yet on the light side, almost watery.

Not a bad beer but definitely missing some key elements for a dunkelweizen, or a memorable beer for that matter. Not worth the hefty import pricetag here in Alberta.

Served in an Ayinger weizen glass.

Pours a murky bog of brown with a light frothy head. Smells of malts and wheat stretch out to grab the nose, but they do not overstay their welcomes. Those malts and wheat return when the tongue gets involved, with the wheat appropriately making up the majority of the flavor profile. Not too much complexity, though a very faint hint of smoke signal can be detected somewhere in the wheaty static. Lighter than most dunkels that I've had, the taste doesn't hang around too long, but that does make for a pretty drinkable brew.

Served in a nonic pint at the Fishbowl Brewpub, Leavenworth's Boulder Bend Dunkelweizen is a murky chestnut with a small, light tan head that leaves decent lace.

Smell is neutral, with light toast and toffee slowly opening up as it warmed.

Taste is richer, toffee, some noble hop spice, with a very clean finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and light.

Drinkability is high, this is a tasty, nice fall flavor without being to sweet and cloying. Highly quaffable.

Walnut brown that is actually dark reddish orange when backlit with the rising sun. Nearly three fingers of brown sugar colored foam is produced on the pour and ends up hanging around for a spell. Splendid looking lace makes it to the glass, which solidifies the score.

The aroma is average at best. It features a hint of caramel, no cocoa and a sour fruitiness that needs to be toned down on the palate for this to be successful beer. So far, this brew is better than Whistling Pig Wheat Ale.

Boulder Bend can't sustain the decent scores when it comes time to bathe the taste buds. It doesn't have much flavor... and what's there does not impress. If the ABV was a little lower, it would taste and feel like a light version of a dunkelweizen. Actually, it's almost there now.

For starters, there isn't enough malt. Flavors include watery (and unsweet) caramel, the merest hint of cocoa, a tangy toasted wheatiness and a shot of overripe apple juice. No banana and no clove. The beer is simple and bland and doesn't stand out in any way.

The body/mouthfeel is one small step above watery and almost gets there just before the swallow. The carbonation is lackluster too, which doesn't help.

In the final reckoning, Boulder Bend Dunkelweizen Alpine-Style Dark Wheat Ale is no better than Whistling Pig Alpine-Style Wheat Ale. Maybe if Fish put as much effort into brewing as they do into naming, these Leavenworth Biers would at least be decent.

Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a slightly cloudy, barely translucent brown with less than an inch of tan head that dissipated quickly leaving minimal lacing.

A soft wheat aroma is supported by a nice roasty finish. The refreshing wheat flavors coat the tongue, with just a touch of roastiness and hops on the finish.

The body is good, light and full with out being sticky. Drinkability is very good, a great beer for these last few days of summer. Worth trying if you see it and perhaps worth some effort to seek out.

I'm surprised I'm the second one reviewing this beer. My parents (who know nothing about beer) went to Seattle for the week and thankfully brought me home 4 local beers....

Appearance: Opaque. Dark brown bordering on black, a small but nice off white head tops the glass. Lacing even clings to glass. In a pint glass you would guess this is a stout.

Smell: A very wheaty malt with hints of chocolate. A very faint nose overall.

Taste: Tastes much like a regular american wheat ale; by this I mean wheat & a tiny bit of citrus zest. The only difference in this is the color and the presence of roasted malt giving slight chocolate flavors. This more present in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: light in body, bitterness, dryness and appropriate carbonation.

Drinkability: I'm glad I got to be the second reviewer of this beer. Unfortunately this really isn't anything to go crazy about. Its a very average beer, making the marks of the style just barely. The brewers played it really safe with this brew, no experimentation, just a basic american wheat beer with darker coloring and roasted malt. I really appreciate smaller brewers, but in order to compete some of these guys really need to step up there game.

Well, I suppose I'm the first review on this one. I found it at John's Marketplace during my present visit to Portland. It is described as an "Alpine-Style Dark Wheat Ale," so I stuck it under American Dark Wheat. Anyways.

Pours a deeply hazy, translucent brozey-brown. Slim cap of off-white, fine bubbled carb.

Smell is light, of some dark fruit and yeast, touch of chocolate, bit of alcohol.

stronger in the flavor dept. It's yeasty and dark fruity, some red grape and date, a hint of semi-sweet chocolate finishing with a light bitterness and a cloying sourness. Medium bodied with a carbonation that lacks a bit of size and zestiness.

Not bad stuff, just not very good either. What a find i have made ; (
