Coastal Extreme brewing Co. "Newport Storm - Rye Of The Storm"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, notched "FRESHEST BEFORE" "AUG"
So here I have a just slightly past due Newport Storm "Eye of the Storm Double Rye IPA"... I'm not finding any oxidation in either the aroma or the flavor so let's try it.
It looks great in the glass with a hazy deep-copper body beneath a massive head of off-white; and it leaves excellent lacing behind. Some reviewers might ding it for haze, but dry-hopping will do that so I'll just let it pass - it looks great to me.
The rye is clear in the nose, but not in a sharp way. It's malty, and a touch caramelish and toasty as well, but also clearly "rye" with a gentle hint of spiciness. What I don't find are hops... it's grassy and pleasant with a hint of citrus and melon, but it's not what I'd call "IPA hoppy". On the other hand they've labelled it a "Double Rye IPA", and perhaps it needs to show the rye more than it does any hops - I'm going to go with it because I really like it.
Interjection point - it seems to me that Coastal Extreme has really picked up their game. I remember when their beers were not that good, but this one rocks so far! I'll now have to return to the store that I just came from to pick up their other beers that I passed by - and perhaps there's great compliment in that!
As to the flavor, the malty rye base is the focus, balanced by grassy hops, yeasty fruitiness, and a bit of it's own spiciness as well as some moderate (at least for an IPA) hop bitterness at, what, 65 or so IBUs? It's interestingly balanced, and not really what I'd think of as an IPA beyond its strength. The gently sweet and bready, softly spicy, and medium caramelish maltiness acts as the main inner circle of flavor wrapped around a thin-but-solid stake of hop bitterness and then surrounded by a thin ring of fruitiness, followed by an outlying ring of thinner grassy and mildly citrusy/pithy hops. In many ways it's exactly the same beer from start to finish with just a little bit more spice and bite in the end - yet that does not detract from it as it's simply not that complicated, and just enjoyable straight through.
In the mouth it's medium-full in body and gently crisp with an almost seemingly natural carbonation that leaves it supple and smooth across the palate, rounding out some of the perhaps spicy edges that might otherwise be there.
Conclusion: an impressively soft and rounded rye beer (strong rye ale?) that packs a punch you won't see coming. Nicely done all around. Certainly worth looking into.

12oz brown bottle, sample from the brewery.
Massive dense head, great showing of lacing left of the glass. Clear tawny hue. Smells of spicy rye on top of a bucket of grapefruit rinds and fresh cut grass. Fruity esters and a bready confection like maltiness wade through a dense combo of rye, hop bitterness and flavor. Smooth and creamy with a warm backing from the alcohol. Finishes bitter. Pretty damn tasty.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a deep golden brown color with a short dense off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, citrus, some hops and some rye spice.
T: The taste starts out sweet with strong flavors of caramel and citrus. Then some rye spice flavor comes in along with a subdued but complementary hops bitterness. The rye malt character is hearty and creates a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet as opposed to most other rye beers that I’ve had that typically have a harsher bitterness in the finish.
M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
O: Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.

Pouring a cellar temp bottle into a pint glass. The beer pours a bright clear copper hue with some garnet highlights. A creamy beige head foams up 1 cm and fades to a sturdy edge layer. Some grassy hops are evident upon popping the cap. I also get some pine sap and light spicy rye notes. There is a bit of caramel buried in the nose too, but this is a hop forward brew.
First sip reveals a crispy texture and smooth coating body. there is mild spacious carbonation and the beer coats my palate after each sip.
The hops are present on the flavor up front but arent oppressively bitter. I do get a little pine and some citrusy notes with a little general vegetal note. There are just a little bit of caramel notes mixed in and the lingering flavor is some spicy rye and a bit of grassy hops. Finish is dry and I dont get any alcohol floating around anywhere, making this an easy to drink beer. This is a nice interesting beer and the drinkability is high for a fairly bigger beer. I would get this again and share with others.
