Formerly Newport Storm Blizzard Porter

The darkest beer in our Storm of the Season line up comes out when the nights are longest. We use Dark Chocolate and Crystal malts to make this bold porter style ale. Enough East Kent Golding hops are used to flavor the brew. However, no aroma hops are added which allows the malt profile of this brew to take center stage.

I needed a RI tick, who else but Thorpe would come through out of the blue? 12oz bottle, freshest before May, drank from my Rodenbach Grand Cru tulip... Pours a muddy medium brown with hints of amber, too light for a porter. A very light tan had forms about solid ring and a flimsy cap, decent lacing... The nose is on the weaker side. At first I get a burnt chemical note that is a bit off-putting. As you get into the burnt notes turns into a strong molasses note, leads of bread, and a hint of roasted coffee. Average... The taste is borderline bad, wet roasted grains, and a chemical astringent cocoa powder. Blah.

This is pretty bad, will not have this again.

Pours dark with minimal head. Huge aroma of dark roasted malt. Flavor is roasty but I taste the yeast - don’t like that aspect. Has a bitter espresso finish. Decent beer but it lost points with the yeasty flavor.

I am curious as to how I have never before reviewed this beer. It seems like a case of deja vu all over again, but no review/rating exists, so I will delve into it for the edification of all of us. Plus, it helps me to get one closer in the Eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody.

From the Bottle: "Rhode Island's Microbrewery".

I Pop!ped the cap & began a C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. I should probably mention that it was an SA BOS Lager with the etched bottom for increased nucleation. I wound up with just over two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with surprisingly modest retention, rapidly falling to wisps. I didn't even get any lacing to remember it by! 8=( I was cheered up by its Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) color with both NE-quality clarity & garnet/ruby highlights. Nose smelled especially of Baker's chocolate - roasty, bittersweet and with a hint of coffee. Mouthfeel was kind of thin for the style, not watery, but close. Man, the taste left no doubt as to their use of Dark Chocolate malt & since a) that is what they were aiming for & b) it was not stylistically incorrect, it was acceptable. Still, for me, it just seemed like a one-note song. Finish was in that neutral zone between semi-sweet & semi-dry. I was left mostly ambivalent. YMMV.

I love picking this beer up right around key football season. This porter is very nice and light, with a great malty aroma. Not intense on the hops, so most of the taste and aroma comes from the malts. A great blend of Chocolate and minor bitterness. This beer is very easy to drink, if you're a porter fan, I would highly recommend giving this a shot.

No long review here. Didn't even bother. The beer straight up sucks and until I can get a better or fresher product or whatever the hell the problem seems to be it will continue sucking.

12 oz. bottle poured into a standard pint.

Appearance: Pours a clear reddish brown with not much head at all. Minimal lacing. Oddly light of color.

Aroma: Smells of chocolate, some prickly hops, earth, cocoa, coffee and molasses.

Taste: This beer is kind of out of balance. The cocoa and chocolate are there, but it has a somewhat unpleasant cloying background taste. As it warms it tastes more and more like someone poured a not-too-good beer into old, cold coffee. There are some pretty deep flaws here.

Mouthfeel: That's the other thing, it's way too thin. I expect more heft out of a porter. It's syrupy at best.

Overall: Kind of a disappointing beer from a brewery I generally enjoy. It just seems like a misfire; it's more of a brown or amber ale than a porter, and not a very good one at that.
