Notes/Commercial Description:
After 13 years of brewing excellence, we deemed it time to produce a year round IPA style. Because a well made, well balanced IPA is a work of art, we took our time with this one and added our own local spin onto it. First we needed a substantial malt backbone to not only create the 6.5% abv, but to compliment later lupulin additions. Heavy doses of Munich Malt and Cara malt help to add body, mouthfeel and a touch of sweetness. Canadian wheat malt also lends to the great foam and head retention. 5 different hops are added at 7 different times in this brew, and the majority of the massive, complicated, but delightful hop profile is derived from Columbus and Cascade hops from the kettle boil (bittering, flavor, and aroma additions). The real icing on this masterpiece, however, comes from literally searching the near and far: Brewmaster Derek Luke married Annie Sherman, a Kiwi citizen in late 2011, visiting New Zealand for their honeymoon. Upon return, Derek came back raving of the legendary Motueka hop. Craving to satiate the “near and far desire”, this hop is added in conjunction with Chinook hops grown right here in RI from Ocean State Hop farms during the lengthy dry hopping process. The result: A fantastic IPA 100% produced locally with local hops, yet worldly in its own right!

Poured from a bottle with no freshness notched off the notch area. Cap reads "first rule of beer club, don't talk about beer club.
Pours a deep honey gold, with big pillowing white head that never leaves the top of the glass. aggressive bubbles flying all over. very nice. lots of lacing.

aroma is very sweet. caramel malts, orange creamsicle and some slight grassy hops.

taste begins with a mixture of sweet bready malts, caramel and pine hops. Bitterness quickly follows, overflowing all over the tongue and zapping the buds to life. citrus hops, grass, mild pine, and lime zest. there is a solid caramel sweetness that holds the bitterness in check, and balances the varying hop flavors well. an overall earthiness to the entire hop profile that melds nicely with the sweet malts for a pleasant finish that is both bitter and a bit creamy.

mouthfeel is medium bodied and vibrant. zingy hop bitterness that lingers. solid but not overdone carbonation.

I picked this up on a whim and am very pleasantly surprised. Finally a unique single ipa that is tasty and drinkable and very enjoyable. I'll be buying this again, just hoping that it is notched for freshness this time...

12oz bottle, day 11 of the 2013 Craft Beer Advent Calendar. Freshest before January, so best that this wasn't at the tail end of the 24 days, eh?

This beer pours a mildly hazy, medium golden apricot amber hue, with two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat bubbly off-white head, which leaves some skewed bike chain lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of semi-sweet bready, biscuity, and a tad pastry-like caramel malt, candied orange, a more bitter grapefruit pithiness, a bit of gooseberry, lemongrass, and further floral, piney hops. The taste is rather bitter grapefruit, pine, and tropical fruit, a reduced, but still steady biscuity caramel malt, a twinge of hard toffee, wheat grain, and yet more leafy, kind of perfumed hops.

The carbonation is a bit peppy at times, and generally sturdy, the body a decently rounded medium weight, and mostly smooth, those bitter hops making a bit of ingress here. It finishes off-dry, the biscuity caramel and edgy wheat malt still doing all they can to parry the persistent bitter fruity and flora-based hop esters.

A pleasantly balanced IPA, the complexity of both malt and hop not gone unnoticed. I'd like to give this one a go right off the bottling line, because, despite its near old-age, it's still pretty robust and tasty. The price to be paid for secrecy, I suppose.
