On tap at Sammy's Gourmet Burgers & Beers, served in a shaker pint (not chilled, only due to my asking for it that way).

A: Arrived in the glass a slightly cloudy deep amber, with a creamy, just off-white head. Said head left sheetlike lacing down the sides of the glass as I drank. Bubbles streamed continuously from the bottom of the beer.

S: Unfortunately, due to the location, I couldn't get much of the nose. What I was able to smell involved toast drizzled with honey as one sits amidst a freshly mown lawn.

T: Much like what I detected from the nose, actually. This reminded me of mowing grass around a beehive overflowing with honey, near a bed of fragrant flowers and an open window out of which wafts fresh baking bread. What hop presence is there does not cut into the sweetness overmuch, allowing it to star. As the beer warms, some subtle spiciness emerges, hints of coriander and cardamom.

M: Light in body and rather well carbonated, this drinks lively.

O: A rather enjoyable biere de garde, which manages to provide a decent array of hop flavors without steamrollering the malt.

Brave stuff from a worthwhile brewery. This is an accomplished Saison that could be labeled as Fantome Hiver’s baby brother. It brings an mild sourness to the caramel dough nutty complexity that forms the backbone of this hazelnut amber brew. Buttery and musty with hints of grass and hay. Parties in the mouth. Medium bodied with nice light carbonation. No head. Excellent session Saison…but aren’t they all?

Not a beer style ventured into by many American brewers. A crisp-looking ale, clear brassy color with a tight, tiny-bubbled lacing. Candied fruit, white chocolate, shortbread, mild spice and wildflowers blow all expectations out of the water ... a godly aroma. Dried malt character blankets the palate, a bit biscuity but more of a dried grass flavor. Fruitiness abounds with hints of pear cider, baked apples and golden raisins, with a hint of alcohol within. Bubblegum? Herbal hop flavor and a small measure of bitterness checks any sweetness that may have lingered. Super tasty, hunt this beer down and get a semi-stinky cheese to throw it at.

Bought this one on a whim because it looked good and is brewed in the IL suburbs where I grew up. Pours from the bottle an opaque amber color with hints of red. No real head to speak of on my pour at least. The smell is malty with some caramel and dare I say vinegar tones coming through. I can also detect a hint of hops, but it is definetly not upfront in any way. Quite a unique smell, this being my first tasting of the biere de garde style. The first sip is interesting...almost has a sour aspect to it. Hints of caramel and grape/plum come through along with a slight hint of vinegar. On the back palate I can taste some hops, which helps bring this together nicely. It's a little much for me personally. The mouthfeel is very light and airy...with a decent amount of carbonation. As far as drinkability...I don't think I'd have too many of these in one sitting, but I may come back to it again because it's so different from everything else I have tried. Overall, it's a nice brew and I look forward to exploring more of what Two Brothers has to offer.

A - Pours a clear light amber with one finger of quickly dissipating head. Very little lacing left behind.

S - caramel malts and apples, with a bit of apple cider.

T - quite a bit of fruit in the taste, but also a nice earthiness. Again fruit is mostly apple but some dark dried fruits as well.
Nice earthy dry finish. Malts are both caramel and biscuit. Some nice spicing as well.

M - Medium mouthfeel, slightly sticky.

O - overall a very nice beer. Seems like every beer that I have had in this style is quite different, so I have no idea how well this fits the style, but his is a nice easy drinking brew.

On Tap @ Bukowski's Tavern.

A- Excellent head retention, lacing sticks all the way down the glass. Clear deep semi-dark copper color.

S- Baked apple, toasted dark bread ... hint of alcohol and spice.

T&M- Smooth and creamy, nice rounded malty body of medium size. Super malty, not sweet but balanced. Toasted, bready and fruity. Light hopping. Yeast twang, more toasted malt ... finishes slightly sweet.

D- Very tasty, easy to drink. Lovely mouthfeel, lots of malt and old world beer character.

12 oz bottle with "best by" date on the label. Pours a slightly hazed, deep red amber body with a small beige head that retains very well. Lots of patchy lacing on the glass.

Aroma is toasted caramel, spicy and floral hops, and a McIntosh apple note. Very nice.

Mouthfeel is solid medium with a zesty carbonation.

Taste is dominated by a caramel malt sweetness that is accented by a red apple cider presence. Spicy hops bitterness is solid and adds a pleasant balance. Very tasty!

Very well crafted and very tasty. "Brasserie Des Deux Freres" on the label adds a quirky French touch.

12 ouncer, with best by dating of 7/19/08 on the rear label. Pours a warm, orangy shade of amber, slightly cloudy, lightly toasted whole wheat bread head, that leaves just a bit of scattered lacing. Spiced up nose, with hints of spearmint, pepper, and more toasty notes. Flavorful brew, more toasty/wheat flavors, fruit, smoke, and sweet malts. Well worth a try, especially for appreciators of this French/Belgian style.

Appearance: medium carbonation, small head, clear, light amber

Smell: malt, grass, alcohol, and apple

Taste: malt, sour bitter apple, pine, hops, small bit of an alcohol taste

Mouthfeel: sour, bitter, medium bodied, can feel the carbonation

Drinkability: In looking at the guidelines, this one meets the style fairly well. I am not sure if I would have another one, but I can see this being sessionable for someone who likes the style.

Bottle with best before date of 9/1/11

A-Dense tan head that continues to skim the surface for half a glass, hangs on to the sides as well. Color is amber/reddish with lots of yeast floating around

S-Yeasty, balanced hop and sweet, toasted malt aroma

T-Malty upfront that quickly ends with a bite of alcohol and astringent hops to cleanse the palette

M-Heavy and creamier than I expected. Pleasant.

D-After finishing 1-the end note of hops and alcohol bite limit the drinkability a bit for me.

Smells of thick malts, bringing a brown sugar syrup aroma to the forefront, with hints of toasted grains just underneath. Most of these grain smells hint towards light toasted, but I seemed to detect just a hint of chocolate malt. A slight, fresh rosewater quality rounds out the nose.

On the tongue, the beer sports a sweet fullness, with apricot and butter flavors intermingling with brown sugars and caramels. A nice bitter hoppy background fuzz provides the perfect complement, tempering the sugars with just a touch of sour grapefruit, and a hint of rosewater. The sugars last well into the mouthful, peeling off near the end to expose a toasted grain base. The aftertaste carries all of the primary flavors, and lasts for quite some time, wavering between sweet and hoppy bitter.

Overall, while it may be true that this beer doesn't adequately represent the flavors present in a French-style Country Ale, it is still a well-flavored and nicely balanced brew, and worth a taste.

Appearance is clear copper with ruby highlights. Received a disappointing "frat pour" otherwise known as no room left for decent foam, but it looks like an off-white head and it had decent lacing throughout. Aroma is very faint, but I'm in a typical college bar so I would be surprised if I could smell anything beyond the stale beer, ashtray and urinal cake. Anyhoo, what I could detect was some sweet malt, faint fruity esters, and some flowery noble hops. Taste is bursting with some awesome toasted malt with a slightly fruity sweetness of plum, cherry, and brown sugar. Those flowery noble hops have a moderate flavor and blend nicely with the malt but leave only a slight hop bitterness on the tongue. Medium mouthfeel is very smooth and finishes dry that makes for a very refreshing tasting experience. An excellent example of an amber style bier de garde and absolutely wonderful on tap.

Brown in color with good clarity. A fingernail of beige foam covers the majority of the top. Aroma is all amber malt. The flavor is primarily amber malt with notes of caramel. The mouth is lightly salty and dry.

Poured into grand tulip; darker orange/amber with a medium fizzy white head that dissipates in a few moments, leaving some scattered lacing. Smells of toasted malt, with slight bitterness and some leafy notes. Taste is nutty toasted malt with a wet, clean feel to it. Reminds me of a wee heavy, but less boozy. Slight twinge of crisp hops finishes off, leaving some sticky remnants of the toasted malt behind. My first of the style, and it seems tasty.

How weird best by 12/10/09 never had that happen before. Appears a slightly hazed amber hue with a nice creamy tawny off white head, leaves behind ample lacing with each sip fine scattered layers at that. Aroma has a nice vinous herbal flow to it with a touch of citrus hops but dominant bread like caramel roasted malts are the highlight of the nose. Flavor really hits with the sweetness upfront with caramel malt some heavy grainy Wheaties like flavors with semi bitter finish with some citrusand herbal hops carrying through in the finish. I get a nice fruity refreshing quality the whole time with a dry yeast and mild spiced finish. A really nice sessionable ale that packs massive layers of flavor, mouthfeel overall is smooth carbonation is moderate and natural body pulls off at least a medium ranking without overdoing any one area very balanced. Drinkability is sound in all regards I wish these guys would be more readily available for me, this Domaine DuPage was like a nice piece of crusted bread buttered perfectly with herbs sprinkled on top it was simplistic and perfect for the experience it's trying to pull off.

Pours clear, medium-dark amber with a creamy tan head that has good durability and leaves fine lacing on the glass.

Aroma is malty with faint hints of vanilla and spices.

The flavor features a solid, medium malt base with hints of herbs, orange and grapefruit. Changes with warming.

Medium body with very fine, soft, medium-high carbonation.

O: Refreshing. An interesting, easy drinking and complex brown ale.

Appearance: Nice reddish-bronze color with a thin white head that fades quickly. It has nice lacing on the glass

Smell: Good toasty malt aroma with a very slight hop spiciness

Taste: It taste like eating fresh sweet malt and then it ends with a nice hoppy finish. For having a strong malt taste at the beginning and a good hop taste at the end it really taste balanced by all the flavors.

Mouthfeel: Medium smooth body with no hot alcohol taste and very gentle carbonation.

Drinkability: This really has a full malty taste but the hops are strong enough to support it without being sickly sweet. Very pleasant to drink and seems to fit the style guidelines very well.

Pours a light brown with little head. Very light aroma which smells mainly of sweet malt.

Not at all what I expected, but this is my first Bier de Garde. When I saw it advertised as a french farmhouse style, I figured it would be similar to a Belgian Pale or maybe a Saison. Instead it has a deep complex taste which I think is kind of an Abbey Ale Light. It has a lot of the complexity and spiciness of an abbey ale with a cleaner, sharper finish that makes it extrememly drinkable.

Also my first beer from two brothers, this is a quality beer that I would definitely drink again.

This one was on tap in Hyde Park. Notes are from two days ago.

The off-white head of this copper-colored brew retains fairly well and leaves thin lines of lacing in the glass.
There's a toasted malt with a nice sweetness on the nose with some tart apple and a gentle spice. Hops aroma is very, very light.
There's a little less sweetness in the flavor, though it does contribute to the flavor pretty favorably. The back is all malts with toasted breads and grains with spices and tart green apple.
This one's got a nicely rounded-out crisp and smooth mouthfeel. The body is medium.
This one's a pretty nice brew and was helpful in easing me into an unfamiliar style.

Two Brothers- Domaine Dupage

Limited bottles at Isaac Newton's- Newtown, PA.

A- Good hazy copper brown with a small foamy head. Light lacing.
S- grainy bread crust and malt.
T- lightly toasted grains, bread crust, earthy malt, and a touch of earthy sweet hops.
M- good thick malt with an earthy grainy flavor and feel. Finishes off sweet and dry.

Overall- Improves as it warms up. Pretty decent, worth a try!

Appears an ultra clear brown red color with a short lived whtie head. The ring remains along with some patchy white spots. Sweet toasted caramel malt aroma, a little noble hops, mild fruits/ mostly light green grapes, and mildly spiced. Not really a saison from what I've had...this fits the biere de garde style description very well. Nice taste. Bready, malty, toasted, and more fruity esters weaving thoughout. Mild alcohol in a good way is apparent at random moments. Has a nice grape-like dryness to it and a semi sharp carbonation.

Good all around....easy on the senses but not lacking in complexity.

16oz pour on tap @ Vintage Estate...served in a pint glass

A - frothy light tan colored foam about half an inch in height, settled a little before sticking around nicely the rest of the drink. thin lacing left behind. the beer is slightly hazy and light copper in color.

S - sharp toasted malts and grains, mild earthy hops, some yeasty "country" scents...

T - again spotlight on the toasted malts, crackers...light layer of caramel and nuts. tiny bit of grassy hops along with an over-ripened apple fruitiness. pretty complex.

M - medium bodied for the style, nice bright and crisp carbonation. slightly creamy yet refreshing.

D - liked it, to me this style is all over the place but it grew on me after a few sips. good strong toasty tastes and a certain wildness to it.

Lovely stuff here.
I admire the fact that Two Bros has the balls to label themselves "Brasserie du Deux Freses" on the bottle.

Slightly hazed amber in color. Off white head diminshes quickly.
Very herbal nose with some grainy qualities.
Starts off somewhat simple with toasted carmel dominating the mouth. After and few sips (and allowing it to warm), the complexities opened up. Dough-like malts with grape sweetness. Some nutty and buttery tones. Earthy and some mustiness (but in the best possible way). Carmel sticks around leaning towards toffee. Grassy, hay-like hops come in and dry this out toward the finish.
Medium bodied. Dances nicely in the mouth.
Just fun to drink. Would be great for a session, but also a nice treat in itself.

I got word that this should be available in Madison very soon. I am excited, to say the least.

A large thank you to Bighuge for giving me the advance screening. This one is right up my alley.

Poured from tap at The Village Pub in St. Anthony, MN.

Appearance: Nice clear dark amber/brown color, with a small head that recedes quickly with minimal lacing.

Smell: Sweet, malty, spicy and yeasty. Very Belgian-like.

Taste: Sweet and malty with a nice yeast profile with some complex phenols...clove spice, cinnamon and caramel malts. Very similar to a good Belgian dubbel in flavor.

Mouth Feel: Medium body with lighter carbonation. Has a nice slippery yet clean feel on the tongue.

Drinkability: Very drinkable. It's like a lower ABV Belgian dubbel. I will definitely order this one on tap again if it's available.
