12 oz. bottle, labeled 'Best By 12/1/12'. A 'leftover' from a family gathering in Plainfield, IL (Labor Day weekend - thanks Cousin Roger for buying some craft beer!); poured 10/1/12 to a pint glass back home in Oregon. Label design has changed since the one pictured above.

A: Hazelnut/amber with a slight fuzzy haze. Pours with a healthy off-white head (maybe a fingers-worth) that holds way before gradually falling to a thin skim. Almost no visible carbonation, however; lace is a few freckles and ring fragments.

S: Spicy-sweet scent, pretty strong. Nutty, in a 'Grape Nuts' cereal kind of way. Grainy, a little woody/pulpy.

T: Intriguing 'apple' crispness, good spice and mild tartness. Finish is sturdy, earthy and dry... maybe slightly 'brassy'/metallic, but it's not an off-putting flavor at all.

M: Soft mouthfeel, a mushy and lightly-carbonated grainy sweetness initially. Finish is a little more substantive, a sharper spicing and earthy/woody bite. Overall, a good balance, despite a sugary start.

O: An 'OK' beer, a bit better than what I'd consider 'average'. The moniker 'French Style Country Ale' is more wordy than a 'Bière de Garde' needs to be... No matters, it's easy enough to drink. Enjoyed a couple of these at the cookout last month and was happy to have had another pre-dinner on a Monday at home.

12oz bottle, pours amber-copper with a thin off-white head that leaves some lacing on the glass. Aromas are malty and sweet with toffee, vanilla, and toasted grain permeating the nose. Tastes are sweet, cloyingly sweet at times and towards the end. Notes of vanilla, toffee, toasted grains, caramel, brown sugar, raisin come to mind. Body is medium, creamy, and smooth with modest carbonation. Overall, it's delicate and pleasant but the sweetness gets to be too much towards the end. Still a nice offering from my local brewery.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: medium brown hue with a fair amount of haze to the body. Head is a finger of frothy tan foam. Overall, a nice looking beer!

Smell: sweet malt with a light fruity quality which makes this beer smell almost exactly like sweetened iced tea. It's a little bizarre, but the aroma is so interesting that I have to say I quite like it.

Taste: biscuity malt flavor with a little bit of fruity sweetness. The toasty, biscuity malt quality, while integral to the sweet-tea character, is just a little bit overemphasized in the flavor for my taste. Aside from that, this is a pretty decent brew.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a rather nice creaminess. I like it.

Overall: yes, this beer employs a biscuity malt character which I don't love. However, it is well put-together and, for a beer as biscuity as this, is not bad at all.
