Huge thanks to Wade (BA sprucetip) for the awesome and unexpected box of goodies.
Pours a very dark ruby red, nearly brown ale status, with a large off white head that lingers pretty well and leaves nice lacing.
Nose is of significant hop presence and resin, along with some good grainy sweetness and a little bit of grass with some sharp, yet subtle rye notes.
Taste follows. This is a very nice beer. The hop presence is ever so slighty less than i expected, but it works much better in this beer this way, and is still quite ample. The rye presence and grain profile is absolutely fantastic. A nice slight sweetness, balanced easily by generous hops. The spice-like rye comes through very clear, but not cloying or overdone as is often the case. Nice dry finish without being too parching, and a long aftertaste. Excellent.
The mouthfeel is right about where it should be for this beer. I could stand to have it a tiny bit thinner viscosity wise, but it wouldn't be worth fucking with it for that.
Drinkability is probably the best in any rye beer this dark i've ever had, could easily do a sixer of these bad boys. abv isn't a factor at all.
Overall, probably one of my favorite rye beers of all time. Impeccably balanced, and full of a great diversity of flavors. Simpy an excellent beer. Must try for midwesters or any rye beer lover.
